APPROVAL OF MINUTES

DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE
Director of Public Works Rod Posada introduced Gregg
Meek of Landscape Structures Equipment, who at the
request of the Commission had returned with sketch ideas
for the El Nido Park playground equipment.
EL NIDO PARK PLAYGROUND EOUIPMENT SELECTION
Gregg Meek of Landscape Structures Equipment made a
presentation to the Commission consisting of two designs
for playground structures that will fit in the required area.
He stated that he had only 16 feet of width, which restricts
the choice of play activities and will make both structures
very linear. The first structure, designed for the 2-5 year
olds, has several imaginative play features, including a tic-
tac-toe panel, chimes panel, pilot panel with steering
wheels, 48 -inch deck with a periscope panel, and a double
poly -slide. Below the deck there is a storefront panel for
more imaginative play activities.
Commissioner Chico stated that she would prefer to have
bars rather than solid panels for visibility. Mr. Meek
advised that the structure can be oriented with the panels
set against the back wall, which would allow for visibility.
He advised that the back wall will also have benches. The

Commission concurred that they would prefer the
structures to have a roof.
The second structure presented was designed for the older
children. It offers a math panel, (which encourages
cognitive play), a space travel panel, a solar system panel, a
stepladder up to another deck, and a double wave poly -
slide. Below the deck, another storefront panel is featured
to give a small enclosed space. He pointed out the safety
features on both structures and advised that the color
scheme can be any combination the Commission approves.
Commissioner Fraijo stated she would prefer to have a
"Fitness Cluster", rather than activity panels for the older
age children. Mr. Meek suggested that linear overhead
events might be more appropriate for the older children, i.e.
poles, overhead ladder, and triple rings. He told the
Commission he would design a new set of plans. He noted
that this might also help to reduce the cost of the structure.
Public Works Director Posada asked the Commission if it
would be easier to have the new set of designs for the
second structure left in his office for the Commission to
informally view and said that he would be contacting them
by telephone.
The Commission agreed on the color and structure type for
the 2-5 year olds. Public Works Director Posada said he
would need to present the ideas to the City Manager and
Council before he could place the order. Commission
agreed.
