AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF IRWINDALE DIRECTING THAT GENERAL
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS OF THE CITY OF IRWINDALE
BE HELD ON THE FIRST TUESDAY AFTER THE FIRST
MONDAY IN MARCH OF ODD -NUMBERED YEARS.
A. Recitals.
(i) Pursuant to the provisions of the California
Government Code, the general municipal elections for the City of
Irwindale presently are held on the second Tuesday in April in
each even -numbered year.
(ii) California Elections Code § 2601 provides that a
city council may enact an ordinance requiring its general
municipal election to be held on alternate election dates, as
specified in said ordinance.
(iii) The City Council desires to cause the municipal
elections for the City of Irwindale to be held on the first
Tuesday after the first Monday in March of odd -numbered years in
order to preclude confusion and to conserve City resources as a
result of changes in State law modifying the Presidential primary
election date and establishing said primary election to occur in
March of even -numbered years.
(iv) All legal prerequisites to the adoption of this
Ordinance have occurred.

B. Ordinance.
Now, therefore, the City Council of the City of
Irwindale does ordain as follows:
Section 1.
In all respects, as set forth in the Recitals, Part A
of this ordinance.
Section 2.
This Council hereby directs that general municipal
elections of the City of Irwindale shall be held on the first
Tuesday after the first Monday of March in each odd -numbered
year.
Section 3.
Those elected officers of the City of Irwindale whose

terms of office would have, prior to the
adoption of
this
ordinance, expired following the April,
1996 general
municipal
election, shall, instead, continue in their respective offices
until no later than the fourth Tuesday after the day of the 1997
general municipal election of the City of Irwindale (March,
1997).
Those elected officers of the City of Irwindale whose
terms of office would have, prior to the adoption of this
Ordinance, expired following the April, 1998, general municipal
election, shall instead, continue in their respective offices
until no later than the fourth Tuesday after the day of the 1999
general municipal election of the City of Irwindale.

Section 4.
The City Clerk is hereby is directed to:
(a) Cause this Ordinance to be published in the manner
required by law; and
(b) Within thirty (30) days after this Ordinance
becomes operative, cause a notice to be mailed to all registered
voters in the City of Irwindale informing them of the change in
the general municipal election date effected by this Ordinance,
which notice shall be in accord with the requirements specified
in California Elections Code § 2601.
