AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF IRWINDALE
REPEALING ORDINANCE NO. 496 AND DIRECTING THAT GENERAL MUNICIPAL
ELECTIONS OF THE CITY OF IRWINDALE BE HELD ON THE FIRST TUESDAY OF
MARCH OF EVEN -NUMBERED YEARS
A. RECITALS
(i) Pursuant to the provisions of the California Government Code and City
Council Ordinance No. 496 adopted on February 23, 1995, the general municipal
elections for the City of Irwindale presently are held on the first Tuesday after the first
Monday in March in each odd -numbered year.
(ii) California Elections Code §1301(b) provides that a city council may enact
an ordinance requiring its general municipal election to be held on alternate election
dates, as specified in said ordinance.
(iii) Pursuant to Elections Code § 1301(b), the City Council desires to cause
the municipal elections for the City of Irwindale to be held on the first Tuesday in March
of even -numbered years in order to increase voter turnout by having the election on the
same day as the statewide primary and, in years divisible by four, the same day as the
presidential primary; thereby reducing the number of times voters must go to the polls.
(iv) All legal prerequisites to the adoption of this Ordinance have occurred.
B. ORDINANCE
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Irwindale hereby does ordain
as follows:
(i) The City Council hereby finds that the Recitals, at Part A of this Ordinance
are true and correct.
(ii) The City Council hereby repeals Ordinance No. 496 adopted on February
23, 1995 in its entirety.
(iii) This Council hereby directs that general municipal elections of the City of
Irwindale shall be held on the first Tuesday of March in each even -numbered year.
(iv) Those elected officers of the City of Irwindale whose terms of office would
have, prior to the adoption of this Ordinance, expired following the March 2005 general
municipal election, shall, instead, continue in their respective offices until no later than
the third Friday after the general municipal election of the City of Irwindale in
accordance with Elections Code § 10403.5.

(v) Those elected officers of the City of Irwindale whose terms of office would
have, prior to the adoption of this Ordinance, expired following the March 2007, general
municipal election, shall instead, continue in their respective offices until no later than
the third Friday after the day of the 2007 general municipal election of the City of
Irwindale in accordance with Elections Code § 10403.5.
(vi) The Deputy City Clerk is hereby directed to:
(a) Cause this Ordinance to be posted in the manner required by law;
and
(b) Within thirty (30) days after this Ordinance becomes operative,
cause a notice to be mailed to all registered voters in the City of
Irwindale informing them of the change in the general municipal
election date effected by this Ordinance, which notice shall be in
accord with the requirements specified in California Elections Code
§1301.
