The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the
above time and place.
ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Theresa Chico, Paula Fraijo,
Erlinda Duran; Vice Chair Belen Zepeda; Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Dan
Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Michael Rados, Public Works
Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Clerk
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
MOTION A motion was made by Chair Diaz, seconded by
Commissioner Chico, to approve the minutes of the meeting
held November 7, 2001. Motion was unanimously approved;
Commissioner Fraijo abstaining.
RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented his report detailing
MANAGER GRIJALVA the following:
♦ The Team Club did a great job in collecting canned
goods and clothes and donating them to the Mission.
♦ Approximately 258 cars were pre -registered for the Car
Show that was held on November 11, 2001, with an
additional 137 cars taken that same day. There were
approximately 791 attendees and a total of $8,782.84
was raised and donated to the scholarship foundation.
♦ All recreational programs are coming to an end. Events
such as tumbling, aerobics, and yoga will resume
January 8, 2002. Softball leagues are currently being
advertised.
♦ Volunteers are needed for the Christmas party scheduled
for December 8, 2001. Fifteen tons of snow and crafts
will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Team Club will
have cakewalks throughout day and the Drill Team will
perform at 2:00 p.m. The show will begin after 4 p.m.,
with the magician performing for Y2 an hour, the Tiny Tots

will perform for about 5 minutes, and the Northview choir
will sing. The tree lighting ceremony will be held at 5:00
p.m. and Santa will immediately follow to hand out
stockings. Four sleds will also be available for use by the
children.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo advised that the softball league needs
FRAIJO to make calls to recruit more people.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that flyers have been
MANAGER GRIJALVA sent out to recruit and fees have been reduced by $100 to
attract more people.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo reiterated the need to make calls in
FRAIJO order to recruit more people for the softball league.
COMMISSIONER In response to a question from Commissioner Fraijo relating
CHICO to vendors for the Christmas programs, Recreation Manager
Grijalva advised that a jewelry vendor and a craft vendor
have been established for this year. He also advised that
the Tiny Tots would be selling items such as nachos,
doughnuts and coffee.
COMMISSIONER In response to another question from Commissioner Chico,
CHICO Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the recreational
classes that are being held through Mt. San Antonio College
will re -open in January, with the addition of a knitting and
yarn class, both of which are scheduled for Thursday nights.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo expressed her opinion that the cost of
FRAIJO the tickets for the Disneyland trip are too high.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the cost of these
MANAGER GRIJALVA tickets was increased since the park itself has also increased
the prices of tickets, from $32 for adults and $26 for children,
to $36 for adults and $32 for children.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico suggested adjusting the budget to
CHICO reduce the cost of these tickets, noting that high ticket costs
would deter people from attending.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that this adjustment

CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz thanked Public Works Manager Rados for the
great job in installing the monument. Chair Diaz also

inquired about the status of the water fountain, and advised
that, when it is received, it should be installed in an area
where children would not be able to put sand in it.
ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz clarified that the fountain has

CHAIR DIAZ In response to an inquiry by Assistant City Manager Diaz,
Chair Diaz suggested ordering a blue colored water fountain.
ASSISTANT Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that she would look
into ordering the water fountain.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz commended Recreation Manager Grijalva for his
efforts in organizing the Car Show.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico also thanked Recreation Manager
CHICO Grijalva for organizing the Car Show and noted that it
allowed many families to spend time together. She also
advised that a conference that pertains to recreation issues
would be held in April and inquired about who was interested
in attending.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo advised that there is no budget set
FRAIJO aside for Commissioners to attend conferences.
ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that there is no budget
MANAGER DIAZ for Commissioners to attend conferences, however she also
indicated that she would check if there are funds available to
allow the Commissioners to attend.
ASSISTANT CITY In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Chico, Assistant
MANAGER DIAZ City Manager Diaz advised that there has been no change in
the status of the Recreation sign. She did, however, indicate
that staff wants to set up a sign that is similar to other signs
set up throughout the City.
COMMISSIONER In response to an inquiry by Commissioner Duran,
DURAN Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the after-school
program has been advertised and that there have only been
four people who have signed up, although one was not a
resident.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran indicated that there does not seem to
DURAN be a need for this program, noting the low amount of people
who have signed up.

RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the "Little
MANAGER GRIJALVA Dunkers" basketball league, for children between 3 and 6
years of age, will begin soon. The games are scheduled for
Sundays at 1:00 p.m.
COMMISSIONER Upon question from Commissioner Fraijo, Assistant City
FRAIJO Manager Diaz advised that there is no "Public Works
Manager Update" item set aside on the agenda since the
Commission may address any Public Works issues it has
during the section entitled "Commissioner Items".
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran commended staff and noted that the
DURAN Christmas decorations that have been set up look good.

ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was
adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
