So far, both day camp trips have been very successful, with over 90
children registered this year.

its fourth week and will be going on a field trip to Chuck E. Cheese's
next week. There will also be raffle tickets sold to help support the

of 55 children fed during lunch and an average of 43 children fed
during snack time. So far, a total of 1,199 lunches and 946 snacks

from Dena Zepeda, who requested that the Commission be informed

of her appreciation of Carol Acosta's patience and commitment
towards the Drill Team.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo commended the Recreation Staff for its efforts
FRAIJO in providing excellent customer service and maintaining its programs.
She also thanked Carol Acosta for her efforts.
RECREATION In response to a question by Recreation Supervisor Acosta,
SUPERVISOR ACOSTA Commissioner Fraijo advised that the Commission will bring
suggestions for any possible changes/additions to the fiesta to the
next scheduled Commission meeting.
PUBLIC WORKS In response to a question by Recreation Supervisor Acosta, Public
MANAGER RADOS Works Manager Rados advised that the power to the fiesta booths
was supplied by two different sources and that one of those sources
short-circuited, which caused a disruption in power. He further
advised that his goal is to correct this problem by September.
WALK THROUGH THE PARK
Chair Diaz advised that he has periodically checked the conditions of
the park and found that it is in great condition. Therefore, the park
walk through is not necessary. He did, however, request that Public
Works Manager Rados apply bright blue paint to indicate which
benches were available for reservations. He commented that the
Public Works staff has done a good job in removing graffiti and litter
from the park.

SPECIAL MEETING PAGE 3
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hernandez commended Public Works Manager
HERNANDEZ Rados and his staff for their efforts in maintaining the cleanliness of
the park.
VICE CHAIR ZEPEDA In response to a question by Vice Chair Zepeda, Public Works
Manager Rados advised that he has tested the scoreboard to
determine the cause of its malfunction and discovered that it was
due to an internal power supply failure. He advised that the board
will have to be taken apart to address this electronics problem.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz advised that he had requested Chief of Police
De Ladurantey's or his representative's presence at the meeting to
discuss the problems that are occurring at Irwindale Park due to the
lack of Police Patrol. He advised that patrol is needed especially at
night and that the restroom doors must be locked after park hours.
He indicated that if the children received proper parental supervision,
there would be less problems.
LIEUTENANT BARNES In response to a question by Lieutenant Barnes, Chair Diaz advised
that he would like the weekend park patrols to begin at about 3:00
p.m. or 4:00 p.m. He added that this patrol would prevent people
drinking beer at the park.
LIEUTENANT BARNES Lieutenant Barnes advised that he has discussed this item with Chief
of Police De Ladurantey in May of this year and that he has set up a
deployment schedule to notify officers of the need for weekend park
patrols. He advised that a park patrol was implemented during
summer months, but was not fully staffed. He added that normally
reserves are used to patrol the park, but the number of reserves has
gone down.
COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Fraijo, Lieutenant
FRAIJO Barnes advised that the Police Department is down to essentially six
reserve officers out of a possible thirteen, which is causing the delay
of the park patrol. He added that two reserves may be hired within
the next two months, but would still require training. He advised that
this problem should not exist next year.
THERESA CHICO Theresa Chico expressed her opinion that the damage that has
occurred at the park has been committed by individuals who are not
residents of Irwindale. She continued by saying that the Park Patrol
is crucial on nights and weekends, especially during evening hours.
LIEUTENANT BARNES Lieutenant Barnes indicated that, during the period between June 15,
2002, to July 15, 2002, the Police Dispatcher logged the number of
times an officer patrolled the park and the types of service calls

received. He handed out an information sheet detailing the results of

CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz, Lieutenant Barnes advised
that two citations were issued for drinking alcoholic beverages at the
park.

COMMUNICATIONS
