IRWINDALE COUNCIL CHAMBER MARCH 2, 2005

The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time
and place.

Present: Commissioners Carol Hernandez, Erlinda Duran;
Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz
Absent: Commissioner Belen Zepeda
Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Dan Grijalva,
Recreation Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; and
Armando Hegdahl, Records Clerk
There were no speakers.
MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Hernandez, seconded by Vice
Chair Fraijo, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was
unanimously approved.
ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES
MINUTES
The following minutes were approved:
1) Regular meeting held February 2, 2005.
RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
MANAGER GRIJALVA
1) All programs continue as scheduled.
2) There has been good participation by parents in the basketball
program, which is in its second week.
3) The grand opening of Jardin de Roca Park will be held March 19th
from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Entertainment, food, and
demonstrations will be given. Also, a plaque will be dedicated
honoring Deputy David March, whose wife will be attending the
event.
4) The Jardin de Roca Park has been draining very well in light of
the torrential rain experienced recently.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager
Grijalva advised that the new park will include new lighting and new
tennis court nets.

RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that Recreation Supervisor
MANAGER GRIJALVA Zepeda is doing an excellent job in making the arrangements for the
grand opening of Jardin de Roca Park.
CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz, Recreation Manager
Grijalva advised that staff cleans the park on Saturdays as well as on
weekdays.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager
Grijalva clarified that firefighters could utilize the gym between 8:00
a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Also, the staff member who monitors the gym
lobby also monitors the weight room.
PARK MASTER PLAN — STATUS UPDATE
PUBLIC WORKS Public Works Manager Rados presented the following update:
MANAGER RADOS
1) Construction has been completed at Jardin de Roca Park. The
park is currently being maintained and the construction crew will
remove the perimeter fence the morning of the grand opening.
COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Duran, Public Works
DURAN Manager Rados advised that there have been minor trespassing
issues at the new park.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Public Works
Manager Rados advised that the fence that encloses the pool at
Irwindale Park will be raised in an effort to prevent accidents.
In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager
Grijalva advised that three individuals have been hit by softballs
while in the pool.
COMMISSIONER ITEMS
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hernandez commended the Recreation Department
HERNANDEZ for the success of the Recreation Center dedication.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo relating to patrol of the
parks by the Police Department, Recreation Manager Grijalva
advised that officers would randomly patrol the park, such as is the
case at the existing park. Also, those who are present at the skate
park that do not wear safety equipment when required will be cited.
He added that two video cameras will be installed at the park to
assist in the prevention of vandalism.
