The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Present: Commissioners Carol B. Hernandez, Erlinda Duran, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Sol Benudiz, Chief of Police; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved: 1) Regular meeting held January 3, 2006. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The Competitive Cheerleading Squad placed 1St Place in four different categories in the cheerleading competition held on January 27th. Recreation Manager Grijalva commended the cheerleading instructors. There will be another competitive cheer event to be held this month. 2) The Youth Basketball League will begin on February 18th. There are eight teams: four teams in the A Division and four teams in the B Division. There are also 24 youths participating in the Lil' Dunkers program. 3) The C Division Basketball Tournament for SCMAF will be hosted by the City of Irwindale in the gymnasium during March 19-22. 4) The Tiny Tots will hold a book fair the week of February 18-22. 5) The Teen Club will begin its "Stuffed with Love" donation campaign this week. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 7, 2007 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo suggested that a flyer be sent to residents to remind them the Teen Club is available for sign-ups. COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Zepeda, Recreation ZEPEDA Manager Grijalva advised that staff could check into arranging a gymnastics class for children over 9 years of age. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS COMMISSIONER ITEMS VICE CHAIR FRAIJO CHIEF OF POLICE BENUDIZ There were none. Vice Chair Fraijo requested to place an item on the March agenda to discuss establishing a dog park in the City. Chief of Police Benudiz briefly reported on the Police Department's enforcement activity in the City parks. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz stated that additional police presence at the parks was instrumental in deterring additional vandalism. He also spoke about the two light poles that were stolen at the Trammell Crow Site. ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that it is a trend throughout MANAGER DIAZ Southern California to strip industrial developments of large pieces of equipment and infrastructure. ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the skate park cameras MANAGER DIAZ are operational and that the recording devices should become operational by tomorrow. She added that Meridian Park, for lack of an official name, is complete and ready for use. The park will be closed and locked by the Police Department every evening. COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Duran, Assistant City DURAN Manager Diaz advised that the City's Municipal Code stipulates the operating hours of the City Parks. A sign will be placed at the park to notify residents of the park's operating hours. She added that the skate park section of Jardin De Roca Park will be closed for approximately 30 days for graffiti removal and concrete repair. In response to a question by Commissioner Duran, Public Works Manager Rados indicated that there has been less destruction at the park lately since there it is being used less. CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz, Assistant City Manager Diaz indicated that staff will suggest that the park in the Meridian area have a "mini -opening" for residents living in the area. Once the City Council officially names the park, a grand opening will be held.
