The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Carol B. Hernandez, Erlinda Duran, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Priscilla Zepeda, Recreation Supervisor; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION MANAGER GRIJALVA COMMISSIONER ITEMS ITEM NO. 3A CONSIDERATION OF POSSIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A DOG PARK MINUTES The following minutes were approved: 1) Regular meeting held March 7, 2006. Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: 1) The C Division Boys Basketball tournament was recently held. Pasadena won 15t place and La Verne placed 2nd 2) The gym was painted. 3) The teens wish to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in May when heir Teen Room is completed. 4) There are two week left in the basketball league. 5) Day camp and teen trips have been scheduled, such as the trip to Disney's California Adventure and a trip to see the play "Wicked". CONSIDERATION OF POSSIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A DOG PARK (Requested by Vice Chair Fraijo) PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES APRIL 4, 2007 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo stated that several residents have expressed interest in a dog park within the city and suggested that a flyer be sent to residents to determine interest. ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz suggested refraining from sending MANAGER DIAZ flyers yet since it conveys the idea that the city is already planning to build one. She also spoke on the various issues involved in setting up such a park, such as funding and land allocation. She also suggested that the group that is interested in the dog park present its expectations to staff. ITEM NO. 3B DISCUSSION OF PARK PATROL DURING SPRING BREAK DISCUSSION OF PARK PATROL DURING SPRING BREAK POLICE SERGEANT Police Sergeant Robert Avila advised that park patrol plans have ROBERT AVILA been established, consisting of patrolling the parks daily from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and will include responses to CAD calls. An officer will also be present on the weekends from 2 p.m. until closing. This schedule will begin this weekend on Saturday and will continue through April 20. CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz, Sergeant Avila indicated that the park has only seen minor incidents lately and that patrols are being conducted daily. Assistant City Manager Diaz, responding to a question by Chair Diaz, indicated that the park cameras are now operational and are recording. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Lieutenant Christopher Bojorques advised that summer patrol will commence June 15t and continue through September. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz reported a damaged window at the gym. RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the window will be MANAGER GRIJALVA replaced very soon. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Public Works Manager Rados indicated that the tears at the tennis court tarps can be patched. As a response to question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Assistant City Manager Diaz indicated that the city's waste hauler sorts recyclables from the rest of the waste. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES APRIL 4, 2007 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 COMMISSIONER In answer to Commissioner Duran's question, Recreation Manager DURAN Grijalva stated that the Music in the Park concert series will begin the week after 0' of July. CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz, Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the Easter Egg Hunt will be held this Saturday. He added that the KidZone program is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS There were none.
