The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SWEARING-IN OF COMMISSIONERS CAROL B. HERNANDEZ AND VERONICA S. BARBOSA-LARA COMMISSIONER HERNANDEZ COMMISSIONER BARBOSA — LARA COMMISSION REORGANIZATION Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Dan Diaz, Paula Fraijo, Carol B. Hernandez, and Belen Zepeda Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Linda J. Kimbro, Deputy City Clerk; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician Commissioner Carol B. Hernandez was sworn in as a Parks & Recreation Commissioner by Deputy City Clerk Kimbro. Commissioner Veronica S. Barbosa - Lara was sworn -in as a Parks & Recreation Commissioner by Deputy City Clerk Kimbro. RECORDS TECHNICIAN Records Technician Hegdahl explained that it would be appropriate HEGDAHL to conduct the re -organization of the Parks & Recreation Commission and opened the floor to nominations for the position of Chair. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo nominated Commissioner Diaz to serve as FRAIJO Chair. There being no further nominations, Records Technician Hegdahl closed the floor to nominations and, on a call for the vote, Commissioner Diaz was unanimously appointed to the position of Chair. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz resumed the chair and opened the floor to nominations for the position of Vice Chair. Chair Diaz nominated Commissioner Fraijo to serve as Vice Chair. There being no further nominations, Chair Diaz closed the floor to nominations and, on a call for the vote, Commissioner Fraijo was unanimously appointed to the position of Vice Chair. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR There were no speakers. JANUARY 2, 2008 PAGE 2 MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Hernandez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Commissioner Barbosa-Lara abstained. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved: 1) Regular meeting held December 5, 2007 RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update for the MANAGER GRIJALVA month of December: 1) He congratulated Commissioners Hernandez and Barbosa-Lara on their re -appointment and appointment, respectively. 2) Approximately 250 individuals attended the Christmas Party. He thanked those who participated in the event. 3) Forty participated in the Day -Camp trip to watch the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie; sixteen teens attended the trip to Knott's Merry Farm. 4) There are currently 38 registered to attend the Day -Camp trip to Knott's Merry Farm. 5) The Teen Club recently donated gifts to the children at the Cancer Unit of the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. 6) Attendance is steady at the physical fitness classes. 7) The gym floor was recently re -finished. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS There were none. COMMISSIONER ITEMS DISCUSSION HELD Discussion was held relating to the increase in attendance of recreation classes, efforts to increase basketball registrations, how the Teen Club obtained gifts for its donation to the Cancer Unit of Children's Hospital, procedures relating to bus passes, the extent of acts of vandalism at the parks, care and maintenance of the park grounds, the target completion date for the EI Nido Park project, the PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING JANUARY 2, 2008 PAGE 3 condition of the new neighborhood park, the reason behind the lack of a bus stop at the park, that the women's restroom at Irwindale Park will be renovated, staff will address the locker room at the pool, and that children are hurting themselves when sliding their hands along the edge of the pool's gutter.
