The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Carol B. Hernandez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Hernandez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as corrected: 1) Regular meeting held October 1, 2008. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) Flag Football began in October. There are currently 44 participants in the league, ranging between eight to fourteen years of age. 2) Munchkin Football has 30 participants. 3) He thanked those who participated in the Halloween Festival. He indicated that, although the festival was moved to the gym at the last minute due to the weather, it was still a success. 4) All other programs continue as scheduled. 5) A Christmas Holiday event will be scheduled for the second week in December. 6) The gym floor will be re -done during the second week of January; the gym will be closed during this process. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 5, 2008 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 COMMISSIONER ITEMS VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the Northview High School Coach inquired about utilizing the City gym for school activities. However, the coach has yet to follow through with his request. CAROL ACOSTA Carol Acosta thanked the Commissioners for their donations to the Halloween programs and for assisting during the Halloween Carnival. CHAIR DIAZ In response to a question by Chair Diaz relating to painting the curb red at EI Nido bus stop, Public Works Manager Rados advised that he is working on it with the Public Works/Engineering Department. Also, upon request by Chair Diaz, Public Works Manager Rados indicated that the dead tree at EI Nido Park will be replaced. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Public Works Manager Rados advised that a recent auto collision by a drunk driver caused damage to the electrical wiring system at the Skate Park, which caused the park to be dark for a few nights during October. However, an electrician has since repaired the damage. Vice Chair Fraijo reported on recent late arrivals by the bus at Northview High School. Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that he will check into this matter. Vice Chair Fraijo spoke briefly on the Covina Christmas Parade. COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Public Works BARBOSA Manager Rados advised that the small park, which acts as a flood basin, is locked by the Police Department to prevent usage when it becomes flooded.
