The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Carol B. Hernandez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Barbosa, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as corrected: 1) Regular meeting held November 5, 2008. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The banquet celebrating the end of the flag football season will be held December 8th 2) The Christmas Celebration will be held on December 13th and will include food, prizes, and entertainment, followed by the Mayor's Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:00 p.m. inside the gym. 3) A trip to Mission Inn has been scheduled for December 6th. 4) A Day Camp trip to Knott's Berry Farm will be held on December 30th. 5) A Teen Club trip to Knott's Berry Farm will be held on December 29tH 6) A trip to watch the movie "Bolt" has been scheduled for teens and the day camp participants for December 23`d 7) A Teen Club Toy Drive will be held between December 1St and December 13th. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to several questions by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that recreational calendars are being mailed to residents instead of the recreation event flyers. He added that the attendance at the events remains consistent and staff has reduced the amount of paper consumption. Recreation Manager Grijalva added that the gym will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as New Year's Eve and New Year's Day; the Kid Zone program will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the New Year; the number of staff members on duty is adjusted depending on the need. COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Recreation BARBOSA Manager Grijalva advised that the job descriptions of recreation personnel state that they will work on an "as -needed" basis. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz requested that the trees at EI Nido Park be trimmed; thanked the Public Works staff for removing graffiti quickly. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo expressed her condolences to the family of the young man that recently passed away at the skate park. In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the video cameras at the skate park do not record. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa wished everyone in attendance a merry BARBOSA Christmas and a happy New Year. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Barbosa pertaining to BARBOSA the budget, Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the Community Redevelopment Agency will be dissolved in the future and that the City currently has more expenses than revenues. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the City will need to make budget adjustments in the near future. A financial update will be received in either January or February. She added that City departments may be asked to make budget cuts.
