The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Carol B. Hernandez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Hernandez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Commissioner Barbosa-Lara abstaining. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held January 27, 2009. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) Basketball teams were selected in January. There are 4 teams in the A Division and 4 teams in the B Division. The program is scheduled to begin on February 16. 2) There has been a change in the location of the bus stop when dropping off children in front of City Hall. The drop off is now located at the north portion of the service road. COMMISSIONER ITEMS VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that, currently, a local church uses the softball field on Saturdays and a new group may begin using it on Thursday nights. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 4, 2009 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 COMMISSIONER Public Works Manager Rados, responding to a question by HERNANDEZ Commissioner Hernandez, advised that the large indentations in the softball field made by a crane that was utilized to change lights have been filled. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested that the Commission receive monthly reports on the City's financial status, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the budget process has not yet begun. However, once it is underway, there will be public meetings where members of the public, including members of the Parks Commission, can provide input. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa thanked those who prayed for the recovery BARBOSA of her father-in-law, who is critically ill; acknowledged the passing of Tony Aguilera; commended Elizabeth Rodriguez, Deleesa Herrera, and Amanda Orosco for training and supporting the Irwindale Cheerleaders. In response to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that there is funding available for the cheerleading program. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz spoke on the need for the Commissioners and all residents to be wary of their surroundings and to contact the Police Department in case of emergencies. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa spoke of an incident where a stranger BARBOSA walked into her mother's home. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo stressed the need to maintain the parks' safety. In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the Easter program will likely be held the Saturday before Easter day. He added that Earth Day will be held in April. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz inquired about the Music in the Park concert series, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva informed the Commission that the amount of funding available will determine whether the concerts will be held. ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz added that the Chamber of Commerce MANAGER DIAZ has agreed to assist the City in the search for sponsors for the concerts.
