The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time
and place.
ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Carol B.
Hernandez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo, Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager, Dan Grijalva,
Recreation Manager; and Becky Romero, Administrative Secretary.

COMMUNICATIONS None
CONSENT CALENDAR A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by
Commissioner Lara, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion
MOTION was unanimously approved.
ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES
MINUTES
1) Regular meeting held July 1, 2009.
The minutes were approved.
RECREATION
MANAGER UPDATE Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
1. Announced the retirement of Carol Acosta.
2. Music in the Park going very well averaging 80 to 100 people a
week.
3. Family camp out had 43 people.
4. Will be having another camp out and have 20 signed up so far.
5. Family trip to downtown Disney had 23 people.
6. Beach trips averaging 28 people.
7. Deep sea fishing trip has nine registrations.
8. Competitive cheer has 14 registered.
9. All programs have been very successful and organizations
selling food have done very well.
10. Waiting for "Back to School' night on August 20tH
11. Football registration flyer should be on the web site very soon.
Practice starts at the end of September.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hernandez asked if the Movies in the Park could
HERNANDEZ consider be moved to the baseball field.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva responded staff was planning to move
MANAGER GRIJALVA to the field however several people complained of no bathrooms or
water available. He stated that moving the movie area to the
baseball field could be a consideration next year.

COMMISSIONER Commissioner Zepeda asked if the two night trips could be switched

RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva remarked that could also be

COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hernandez asked if next year the pool could be
HERNANDEZ reopened at night if only for the "Music in the Park" on Thursdays.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo suggested closing the pool for one day and keep it
open at night. She also remarked that as a commissioner, she
would like to bring back night swimming and fireworks.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva replied that all suggestions could be
MANAGER GRIJALVA considered for next year. He also advised that Recreation would be
advertising for sponsorships through the Chamber of Commerce.
COMMISSIONER ITEMS
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked that Carol Acosta be thanked on behalf of
the Commission for all her years of hard work and dedication and
appreciated everything she has done.
COMMISSIONER LARA Commissioner Lara also thanked Carol for giving so much to the
community. She also asked if the City Council would be making a
formal presentation to her for her years of service.
ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that Carol did not want any
MANAGER DIAZ acknowledgement.
COMMISSIONER LARA Commissioner Lara remarked that the cheerleaders had their final
banquet for the year. She gave a special thanks to the parents and
grandparents, leaders Elizabeth Rodriguez, Deleesa Herrera and
Amanda Orosco for the great job they did. She also congratulated
Camille who celebrates 23 years with the City of Irwindale in
October.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz remarked that the banisters/handrails leading to the
library need a paint job.
Chair Diaz also requested information on the criteria required to
declare three buildings in the City historical monuments. The
Presbyterian Church, the mission and the rock building.
ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz responded that she believed the
MANAGER DIAZ Presbyterian Church has already been declared a historical

building, the process for the mission has never been completed,
and the rock building has not been declared. She further stated that
the City has plans to develop the rock building property and the
building may have to be removed. As for the mission, she advised
that staff would have to look into completing the process.
Assistant Manager Diaz informed the Commission that Council has
approved the closing of City facilities except for Recreation and
Police Department, between December 21St to the end of the year
and would be back to work on January 4th. She also stated that
reminders will be sent out concerning ID Card renewal.
COMMISSIONER LARA Commissioner Lara asked how the employees are compensated for
that time.
ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz responded that staff will be required to

CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked the status of the trophy case.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva replied that the trophy case might not
MANAGER GRIJALVA be repairable and may need to have a new one made.
ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was
adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
