The Irwindale Parks & Recreation Commission met in regular adjourned session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners: Theresa Chico, Paula Fraijo, Belen Zepeda, Olivia Grijalva and Chairman Diaz. Also present: Recreation Director Frank Barbosa, and Secretary Arline Miranda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES May 6, 1998 Commissioner Fraijo: Commissioner Fraijo stated she knew there wouldn't be any grant money used for the gym and asked for the deletion from the first paragraph of the second page with regard to the third sentence - the remodeling of the gym. Commissioner Chico 'Pertaining to the minutes on the second page, I requested a walk-thru-the-park, but it wasn't on the agenda. Could we continue that to the next meeting? Commissioner Chico made motion to add to the next agenda a walk-thru-the- park-meeting. Second: Commissioner Fraijo All in favor. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion: Commissioner Chico With Corrections Second: Commissioner Fraijo with corrections All in favor. CITY ENGINEER'S Information received and filed information provided with UPDATE regard to the grants available. Commissioner Chico requested information be supplied for. playground equipment. RECREATION DIRECTOR Selection of booths There were six booths with requests for propane use and 5 booths requests for non -propane, one for the Bar-B-Que. A total of 12. Booth selections for the different organizations were drawn by Recreation Director Barbosa: 1. Our Lady of Guadalupe - #6 2. Our Lady of Guadalupe - #7 3. Irwindale Youth Spurs - #8 4. V.F.W. - #4 June 3, 1998 Page 2 NO -FIREWORKS SIGNS There will signs posted announcing that "No Fireworks" will be permitted on the park grounds. This will be in English and Spanish. 4th OF JULY Recreation Director Barbosa gave a quick run-down of the up -coming 4th of July activities which will start from 8:30 a.m. and end at 9 p.m. with the fireworks. There will be softball and horseshoe games and a volleyball tournament. Flyers will be sent to residents announcing the sign-up for the volleyball teams. Chairman Diaz will be umpiring. Our Divine Savior Church asked if it would be okay to put an easy -up booth towards the pool for a fish game. Permission was given. The dancers will be performing at noon time. The food booths will be also opened at noon. Food booths and music will close at 8 p.m.. MUSIC AT THE PARK Starting July 9th we will be having music in the park. This will be every Thursday. So far, the people providing the music are being very reasonable with their fees to help us get started. We are hoping to have an arts and crafts fair at the same time to help offset some of the expenses for the music. Commission Chico asked if any of the Teen Club would be selling any thing. Director Barbosa explained there wouldn't be any food on the premises, but the snack bar would be opened. There will be an arts & crafts fair during the performances. Participants will need to provide their own tables. SPONSORS FOR DAY CAMP Director Barbosa announced the need for sponsors for day camp. It was suggested that $25.00 be solicited from any one that would like to help. About twenty-five children have already signed up for day camp. Requests for sponsors have been solicited and notices have been attached Park & Recreation Meeting COMMISSIONER CHICO: 16th of SEPTEMBER FIESTA COMMISSIONER ITEMS June 3, 1998 Page 3 to the city payroll checks. Director Barbosa asked Commissioner Chico to be on the committee to handle this program. She said yes to his request. Commissioner Chico will bring back information re family discount for park activities. The 16th of September fiesta will be on Saturday, September the 12th and we will have a car show. He explained that last year we had about 80 cars, hopefully we can get at least a hundred with motorcycles involved. The cost of registration will help offset some of the costs for DJ and trophies and other items. Hopefully we can operate in the black. We are looking for volunteers for that day. COMMISSIONER CHICO Commissioner Chico asked if there had been any feedback with regard to the picnic overhead being painted. Director Barbosa assured her that there had been. She also brought attention to all the weeds in front of the gym. Also, the cement circle still needs to be considered. Mr. Barbosa said the City Engineer needs to be consulted. TRASH CANS Commissioner Chico asked if it was possible to have more trash barrels be distributed at the park over the weekends due to the larger crowds visiting then. She also wanted to know if the play ground was being raked regularly. Director Barbosa thought so, but would find out. COMMISSIONER FRAIJO Commissioner Fraijo asked if the sprinklers are turned on the southside of the park? They need to be checked, the grass is a little browner on that side. Commissioner Fraijo also asked about the weeds by the ball field. Director Barbosa explained the situtation had been taken care of. SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATION: Chairman Diaz asked if there was anyone who wished to speak. There was none. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, Chairman Diaz adjourned to the next meeting of July 1, 1998. Meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m..
