The Irwindale Parks & Recreation Commission met in regular adjourned session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners: Theresa Chico, Paula Fraijo, Belen Zepeda, Erlinda Duran and Chairman Diaz. Also present: Co -Recreation Directors Jackie Delgado and Dan Grijalva, Assistant to the Public Works Director, Edgar Rojas, and Secretary Arline Miranda. SWEARING IN Linda Kimbro, Deputy City Clerk, did the swearing in of Commissioner Terry Chico and newly appointed Commissioner Erlinda Duran as they repeated after her and swore the Oath of Allegiance. The Commission welcomed both Commissioners to the dais. REORGANIZATION Chairman Diaz opened the nominations for Chairman. Commissioner Chico nominated Dan Diaz Commissioner Fraijo gave the second. All were in favor. Nominations for Co -Chairman were opened. Commissioner Chico nominated Commissioner Zepeda. It was seconded by Commissioner Duran. All were in favor. CITY ENGINEER UPDATE The minutes of February 3, 1999 were approved as presented. Motion: Fraijo Second: Diaz All in favor. Commissioner Chico asked if the section by the playground, Section B could be tended to. She had to clean up the table and the area before they could use the area. She also, wanted to know if the ground vacuum was not working. Edgar Rojas, Assistant to the Public Works Director, was present, representing the Public Works Director this evening. He said he would advise Mr. Posada of the Commissioner's requests. Commissioner Chico asked him to please inform Mr. Posada, that the playground slide has graffiti scribbled on it. She also requested the benches be checked for graffiti. and the library wall be cleaned of the profanity scribbled on it. Park & Recreation Meeting March 3,1999 Page 2 APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of February 3, 1999 were approved as presented. Motion: Fraijo Second: Diaz All in favor. The Commissioners were also concerned regarding the level of sand which has not been brought up to the proper safety level in the playground area. There was some discussion regarding the Easter hunt and the maintenance that is necessary for the park to be ready. There was some discussion regarding the safety of the benches and tables being bolted down. Commissioner Fraijo requested they be checked by the public works department to see if there's any danger of them toppling over. Commissioner Fraijo commented on the baseball field and how nice it is being maintained. Commissioner Zepeda asked if the tree trunks will be removed. Assistant Rojas replied yes, they would be removed and a different type of tree would be replanted. RECREATION LEADER UPDATE Dan Grijalva, Co -Recreation Director gave a brief report on the months current activities. With regard to the Alejandro Concert, all the tickets were sold. Disney on Ice is scheduled. There are boys & girls basketball teams ,step aerobics, roller skating and ice skating trips scheduled. The kids will also be taken to see the `King and I'. They will try to open the pool dining the spring break. He reported that Pool Manager John Fraijo attended a chemical instruction class and received excellent grades and high praise from the instructor . He also received his certification for the class. Commissioner Chico asked if the tile in the pool room can be steam cleaned. Mr. Grijalva said Mr. Posada is aware of the problem, and they will be attending to it. Park & Recreation Minutes March 3,1999 Page 3 Commissioner Chico announced that Saturday mornings they will be providing snacks for the basketball games and any donations will be appreciated. Dan also announced a girls basketball game next Thursday in the City of Azusa at 7 p.m.. Mr. Grijalva reported that the Book Fair was a huge success and complimented Yolanda `Spooky' Jauregui for managing the event so successfully. This was a very successful fund raiser. He also commended Lisa Ahnazan and Commissioner Zepeda for their help. With regard to the Ballet Folkorico dance, at the moment the space seems to be appropriate and if a problem occurs with needing more space it will be handled when the problem presents itself. Commission Duran voiced her concern regarding the children in the Tiny Tots program using the restroom alone. She was assured by staff the children never go alone. They are staff's first priority. CO -DIRECTORS Chairman Diaz made the motion, to recommend to the City Council, that Jackie Delgado and Dan Grijalva be recognized and be made Co -Directors of the Park & Recreation Department. MOTION: Chairman Diaz SECOND: Commissioner Zepeda. All in favor. Commissioner Fraijo voiced her concerns with the bad language that is often used by some of the players and the Coaches not admonishing the players when this occurs. Mr. Grijalva thanked her for informing him and advised he would be sue to be more observant. SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATION NONE ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Chairman Diaz adjourned to the May 5, 1999 meeting at 6:00 p.m.. Meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m..
