The City of Irwindale Park & Recreation met in a regular
scheduled meeting at the above time and place. Y
ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners: Theresa
Chico, Belen Zepeda, Erlinda
Duran, and Chairman Dan Diaz.
Also present: Rod Posada, Public
Works Director, Dan Grijalva and
Jackie Delgado, Park Recreation
Co -Coordinators and Secretary
Arline Miranda. Absent:
Commissioner Fraijo.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR -FOLLOW-UP
The minutes of August 2, 2000
were approved as presented.
Motion: Commissioner Chico
Second: Comissioner Duran
Public Works Director Posada
announced to the Commission that
the plans for `El Nido Park'
were finished and the bids for
the project would be September
28, 2000.
He asked if there were any
questions and Commissioner
Zepeda asked Mr. Posada why the
new water fountains were already
broken. Mr. Posada explained
that he was aware of the damage
and it has been taken care of.
Chairman Diaz requested Mr.
Posada see to it that more brick
dust be filled in the baseball
field. Mr. Posada assured him
it would be done.
Chairman Diaz also asked Mr.
Posada if he was aware of a on &
off switch on the scoreboard.
Mr. Posada answered that he was
aware and they are attending to
put something on the area so
kids wouldn't be able to reach
it.

Up -Date (Drug Awareness Program)
SEPTEMBER FIESTA (BOOTHS)
Jackie reported that she had
spoken to Irwindale Police
Officer Avila. He has indicated
that he may possibly have some
speakers and hopefully would
have some definite idea of who
the speakers would be and lined
up by the next meeting. Chairman
Diaz suggested having periodic
meetings so the parents can
attend more often. He stressed
how important it was to have the
parents fully involved. It was
suggested that by having the
parents help with calling other
parents and the rest of the
community, and handling out
flyers, the more involved they'd
be, the more successful the
program.
Commissioner Duran commented
that many parents are into
denial and don't want to admit
that there is a real problem.
It was suggested that at the
September Fiesta and the
Halloween Party, a table is set
up to hold information re the
Drug Awareness Program and have
some kind of goodies available
for the children.
All the Commission offered to
help with phone calls or in any
way they could to aid Jackie
with this program. Jackie
thanked everyone.
For the September fiesta, there
were 14 sign-ups for booths.
Jackie and Dan had a drawing in
the presence of the Commission.

(David Chico, Public Works
member and present in the
office, reminded the Commission
that an umbrella or some kind of
covering would be required in
order to use the bar-b-que.
Jackie said she would notify the
members of the club.
PARK PATROL After a brief discussion of some
of the problems with the
skateboards and the bicyclists
on the plaza area, it was
requested that the park patrol
be re -instated. Chairman Diaz
instructed Secretary Arline
Miranda to send a memorandum to
the Interim City Manager Joe
Guzzetta requesting the park
patrol.
Re Item 4. The replanting of
colorful plants. Chairman Diaz
requested this item be kept on
the agenda for further
discussion
TEEN CLUB Jackie informed the Commission
that the Teen Club would be
selling food at the fiesta.
There will be a trip to Knott's
Halloween Haunt, Friday, October
13, 2000. A benefit Car show
with Techniques of Los angeles
TINY TOTS
ARTS & CRAFTS FOR CHILDREN
MODEL CAR & ART CONTESTS
will again held, October 22,
2000. It begins at 6:30 a.m.
and will end early in the day.
Brenton Wood & the Dupree's will
be performing.
The Tiny Tots program will begin
on September l9th, 2000.
Adult painting class will be
ongoing until December 12, 2000.
Plans are in effect to bring
back model car and art contests.
Prizes, including ribbons will
be awarded. This was done in
the past and was very
successful.
DRILL TEAM The drill team under the
direction of volunteer Carol
Acosta, Senior Citizen Center
Coordinator, is looking great!
They will be performing at the
September 16th fiesta.
MUSIC -IN -THE -PARK
Co -Director Dan Grijalva's
Report
The music -in -the -park concerts
have been very popular. They
had to reschedule the bands
twice. Once due to a passing
away of one of the band members,
and De Je Vue covered most
graciously, as did David Leon
when he covered for the band,
Balance, when they were unable
to keep their commitment.
Dan reported that the basketball
league was starting September
20th. After the September fiesta
the men's softball league would
begin.
Dan reported that the pool would
be closed because since school
started it was unusually quiet.
Saturday was the last day opened
due to lack of lifeguards due to
their school schedules. They
will also be closed on Labor Day
weekend.
RACE FOR THE CURE
REPLACEMENT OF PLANTS
SAND FOR PLAYGROUND
ADJOURNMENT
Seventy-seven people attended
the beach trip. The beach trips
have been very popular.
Jackie and Dan are currently
working on a pamphlet to be sent
to the businesses.
The playground will be inspected
next week by a certified
inspector.
Dan had handed to the
Commissioners all the flyers
that have been mailed to the
residents for the coming events.
One of the flyers sent, is the
Race for the Cure (Cancer)
October 15, 2000 a 5k (3mi) race
at the Rose Bowl.
After a brief discussion
regarding the selection of
plants, Chairman Diaz requested
this item be placed on the next
agenda.
Discussion regarding the sand
area that needs filling in.
Dan is to remind Rod.
There being no further business,
Chairman Diaz adjourned the
meeting at 7:10 p.m..
