The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Theresa Chico, Erlinda Duran; Vice Chair Belen Zepeda; Chair Dan Diaz Absent: Commissioner Paula Fraijo Also present: Carol Acosta, Recreation Supervisor; Michael Rados, Public Works Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Clerk APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Duran, seconded by Vice Chair Zepeda, to approve the minutes of the meeting held October 3, 2001. Motion was unanimously approved. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Supervisor Acosta presented the staff report SUPERVISOR ACOSTA indicating that the Halloween Carnival was a success with over 200 attendees. She also thanked the Commissioners for their time and contributions. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico expressed her opinion that having CHICO placed the chairs outside was a good idea. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran stated that she enjoyed having the DURAN Carnival on Saturday. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico expressed her opinion that the Carnival CHICO should be extended an hour. She also stated that it was a good idea to have the snack bar available during the Carnival. VICE CHAIR ZEPEDA Vice Chair Zepeda suggested numbering the prizes as a way to promote sales of raffle tickets. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico also suggested taking photographs of CHICO the winners of the costume contests and publishing them in a City newsletter. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 7, 2001 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 RECREATION Recreation Supervisor Acosta advised that about 25 SUPERVISOR ACOSTA members of the flag football teams attended the grief counseling session that was offered. She also advised that the Tumbling classes began on October 2, 2001, and a Drug Awareness Workshop was held on November 3, 2001. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico advised that a question -and -answer CHICO session with regard to community concerns should have been conducted at the workshop. COMMISSIONER Commisioner Duran advised that the Drug Awareness DURAN Committee needs to strategize on ways to increase workshop attendance. RECREATION Recreation Supervisor Acosta advised that 100 cars are SUPERVISOR ACOSTA expected to be showcased at the Car Show that will be held November 11, 2001. She also advised that non-profit organizations, such as the Sister Cities organization and the Chamber of Commerce, have also been given the opportunity to participate by setting up sales/information booths and that entertainment will also be provided. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Chico suggested having the sprinklers turned CHICO off for the duration of the Car Show. VICE CHAIR ZEPEDA Upon question from Vice Chair Zepeda, Recreation Supervisor Acosta advised that she will speak to Recreation Manager Grijalva to set up tables throughout the Park so that the public can sit down while eating during the Car Show. COMMISSIONER In response to Commissioner Chico's question, Public CHICO Works Manager Rados advised that the Public Works staff does not work on Sundays and is not scheduled to work during the Car Show. RECREATION Recreation Supervisor Acosta advised that the Christmas SUPERVISOR ACOSTA Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2001, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with snow and entertainment scheduled to be included. Recreation Manager Acosta also advised that the salsa class started about two weeks ago. CHAIR DIAZ In answer to a question posed by Chair Diaz, Public Works Manager Rados advised that the water fountain has been PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 7, 2001 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 ordered. He also advised that the water has to be domestic and a drain also has to be installed to avoid water overflow. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER CHICO Upon question from Commissioner Chico, Public Works Manager Rados advised that EI Nido Park is doing nicely. COMMISSIONER CHICO Commissioner Chico also stated her opinion that the donation of books by the Library was a good idea. COMMISSIONER CHICO In response to a question from Commissioner Chico, Public Works Manager Rados advised that the issue of the trash cans will be addressed during the park renovation. COMMISSIONER CHICO Commissioner Chico advised that signage for the Recreation Department should also be set up during the renovation. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz commended Public Works Manager Rados for the excellent conditions of the park. SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers.
