The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in adjourned regular
session at the above time and place.
ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Theresa Chico, Erlinda
Duran, Paula Fraijo; Vice Chair Belen Zepeda; Chair
Dan Diaz
Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager;
Dan Grijalva, Recreation Supervisor; and Linda
Kimbro, Deputy City Clerk
MINUTE OF SILENT PRAYER
Chair Diaz requested a minute of prayer for the tragic
terrorist attack that took place in New York and
Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
MOTION Commissioner Fraijo made a motion, seconded by
Commissioner Duran, to approve the minutes of the
meeting held July 11, 2001, with corrections. The
motion was unanimously approved, Vice Chair
Zepeda abstaining due to her absence from the
meeting.
SELECTION OF FIESTA BOOTHS
The fiesta was cancelled due to the terrorist tragedy.
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE
This item was postponed until next month.
RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE
Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that:
♦ The 1St Annual City Swim Meet was held in August
and was well received with over 30 participants.

The swimming pool will be open weekends
through the month of September. The revenue for
the pool was a little over $13,000 for a two-month
period.
♦ Day camp trips ended in August with 62 resident
children enrolled.
♦ All adult leagues ended in August and will resume
at the end of September.
The department attended "Wild Bili's", Universal
City Walk, and a fishing trip for family and adult
trips. All trips sold out.
♦ 186 bus passes were distributed.
♦ The fall program is currently being organized.
Commissioner Chico said that she was glad that the
bus passes were distributed.
Upon Commissioner Duran's request, Recreation
Manager Grijalva explained that State Law requires
any child that rides a state school bus to carry a bus
pass on him/herself that has his/her name, school
name, and a phone number. This pass needs to be
presented before boarding the bus.
Commissioner Fraijo stated that she was pleased with
the wonderful job conducted by the pool manager.
Chair Diaz concurred with Commissioner Fraijo's
statement.
Upon Commissioner Chico's request, Recreation
Manager Grijalva stated that the lunch program was a
success with over 50 resident children being served
daily. The details for next year are still being worked
out.
In response to Chair Diaz's question, Recreation
Manager Grijalva announced that flag football is
scheduled to begin Monday, September 17, 2001, at
'4:00 p.m. Applications are still being accepted.
Recreation Manager Grijalva also stated that:
♦ There is a UCLA vs. Ohio St. football game that
will be held September 22, 2001.

♦ Tickets are being sold for the Paul Rodriguez
comedy show at the Universal Ampitheatre.
♦ Several coaches are already signed up for flag
football.
♦ Cheerleading will begin soon.
♦ Gymnastic/tumbling classes will begin in October.
COMMISSIONER ITEMS
COMMISSIONER CHICO Commissioner Chico commented about the graffiti on
the picnic tables that should be cleaned off.

Chair Diaz inquired about the status of the drinking
fountain at EI Nido Park.
There were no speakers.
There being no further business to conduct, the
meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
