The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Theresa Chico, Erlinda Duran, Paula Fraijo; Vice Chair Belen Zepeda; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Rod Posada, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Linda Kimbro, Deputy City Clerk. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION Commissioner Fraijo made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Chico, to approve the minutes of the meetings held May 2, 2001, and May 15, 2001. Commissioner Chico abstained on the minutes of May 15th from which she was absent. DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE Director of Public Works Posada advised that the opening dedication ceremony for the El Nido Park Project is scheduled for June 16, 2001. Commissioner Chico commented on how colorful the planters were looking and how healthy the roses look. Commissioner Fraijo requested that a trash can be placed on the tennis courts along with a bench. Recreation Manager Grijalva said he would make a service request for Public Works to take care of this. Chair Diaz reminded Director Posada about his request for the Mulberry trees for El Nido Park. Director Posada said this would be done in the future after the dedication ceremony. RECREATION SUPERVISOR UPDATE Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that all programs are continuing to operate very well. The women's softball league just ended, and the plans are to have it up and running again in about two weeks. The summer program flier has just been sent out, as well as the Calendar of Events. He thanked Jackie Delgado for the creativity of the PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES JUNE 6, 2001 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 fliers and the information they contain. He said his department was getting ready for the Fiesta and other summer programs. Recreation Manager Grij alva asked the Commission if they had all received their invitations to the Trammell Crow Open House, which was confirmed. Chair Diaz asked how the Basketball leagues were doing. Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that there were 6 full teams. Chair Diaz also commented on how good the field was looking, Recreation Manager Grijalva agreed and said he also thought the pool was looking good and noted that it had passed inspection by the Health Department. SELECTION OF FIESTA BOOTHS Recreation Manager Grijalva and Deputy City Clerk Kimbro drew for the selection of the Fiesta booths as follows: Propane Sister City Association 41 Our Lady of Guadalupe #2 El Buen Pastor #3 Sister City Association #4 Divine Savior #5 Our Lady of Guadalupe #6 Non -Propane Chamber of Commerce #1 Senior Center #2 Divine Savior #3 Teen Club #4 Toastmasters #5 VFW #6 El Buen Pastor 1 BBQ Commissioner Duran inquired about the type of music that was selected. Recreation Manager Grijalva said Mariachi Sonora and Tierra will be playing. Commissioner Duran requested that the all woman Mariachi band that will be performing at Baldwin Park this summer be considered for PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES JUNE 6, 2001 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 Irwindale next year. Recreation Manager Grij alva said he would look into their costs. WALK THROUGH THE PARK Chair Diaz recessed the meeting at 6:15 p.m. for the Commission and Directors to take the scheduled walk through the park. The results of the walk through the park will be mailed to the Commissioners once the information is compiled. The Commission reconvened at 7:20 p.m., to continue with its regular business. COMMISSIONER ITEMS Commissioner Fraijo Commissioner Fraijo suggested having a further discussion about an outside volleyball court. She requested that it be placed on the next agenda. Commissioner Duran Commissioner Duran asked what was needed to have a permanent Park Patrol and asked that there be enforcement of the "No Skateboarding Allowed" notice in the Park. Chair Diaz Chair Diaz recommended that a memo be sent to the City Council for an update on the permanent Park Patrol. SPONTANEOUS There were no comments made at this time. COMMUNICATIONS ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m. Chair Diaz noted that since the date of the next regular meeting falls on a holiday (4`h of July), the meeting will be re -scheduled for Wednesday, July 11, 2001.
