The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SWEARING-IN OF COMMISSIONERS ERLINDA DURAN & MARGUERITE S. LOPEZ COMMISSION REORGANIZATION Present: Commissioners Dan Diaz, Erlinda Duran, Paula Fraijo, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda, Also present: Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Linda Kimbro, Deputy City Clerk; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician The swearings-in were conducted. RECORDS TECHNICIAN Records Technician Hegdahl explained that it would be appropriate HEGDAHL to conduct the re -organization of the Parks & Recreation Commission and opened the floor to nominations for the position of Chair. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Fraijo nominated Commissioner Diaz to serve as FRAIJO Chair. There being no further nominations, Records Technician Hegdahl closed the floor to nominations and, on a call for the vote, Commissioner Diaz was unanimously appointed to the position of Chair. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz resumed the chair and opened the floor to nominations for the position of Vice Chair. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran nominated Commissioner Fraijo to serve as DURAN Vice Chair. There being no further nominations, Chair Diaz closed the floor to nominations and, on a call for the vote, Commissioner Fraijo was unanimously appointed to the position of Vice Chair. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR There were no speakers. JANUARY 5, 2011 PAGE 2 MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Zepeda, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held December 1, 2010. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The Christmas party held December 11 was a great success, with about 250 individuals having attended. Many people complimented staff for the activities, though there is room for improvements. He thanked Recreation Department and Public Works staff for their assistance in arranging the festivities. 2) Many classes, such as Zumba, Yoga, and Piano, ended in December and will resume in January. 3) The adult trip to the Radio City Christmas Show held December 12 was sold out. 4) The December 18 trip to the Riverside Mission Inn was cancelled due to inclement weather. 5) Twenty-six attended the day camp trip to the movies; twenty-two attended the trip to Knott's Berry Farm. 6) Twenty-seven teens attended the recent trip to Magic Mountain. 7) The gym floor is being re -done and will be available for use beginning Monday. 8) Fliers for the basketball program will be mailed out on Tuesday. Staff hopes the program will begin in February. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER In response to a question regarding the pool, Recreation Manager DURAN Grijalva advised that it is being maintained regularly. The pool building, however, needs roof repairs. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested periodic updates regarding the pool facility repairs. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES JANUARY 5, 2011 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva added that the pool will not be open MANAGER GRIJALVA during the Spring. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo commended the Parks and Public Works Departments for their work in organizing the successful Christmas festivities. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz thanked Recreation staff for the football program. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez expressed her gratitude in being appointed to LOPEZ the Commission and said she was eager to help improve the City's parks and recreation programs. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo congratulated Commissioners Lopez and Duran on their appointments. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran also thanked the Commission and spoke of DURAN vandalism along city sidewalks. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo suggested that a flier be sent to residents reminding them of the graffiti reward program.
