The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time
and place.

Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez,
Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Mike Rados,
Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and
Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician
There were no speakers.
MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by
Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion
was unanimously approved.
ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES
MINUTES
The following minutes were approved as presented:
1) Regular meeting held March 2, 2011.
RECREATION
MANAGER UPDATE
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
MANAGER GRIJALVA
1) Programs have ended in March. Fliers are being sent to residents
to notify them of the programs that will begin shortly. Others, such
as yoga and zumba, have already begun.
2) A trip was recently held to Universal CityWalk. The other trip that
was planned was cancelled due to rain. The same trip was not
rescheduled due to lack of interest.
3) An Earth Day event will be held on Saturday, April 16, and will
have food, exhibits, vendors, contests, and entertainment.
4) An Easter Eggstravaganza will be held on Saturday, April 23, and
will have food, arts & crafts, and entertainment.
5) The following trips have been scheduled: Disneyland on April 13;
Daycamp on April 14; and the movie theatre on April 12.
6) The basketball season is ongoing and is going very well with lots
of people in attendance.

COMMISSIONER ITEMS
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about upcoming baseball games, to which
Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that a trip to watch the
Dodger/Angel game in June has been scheduled. Tickets will be on
sale soon.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran asked about Earth Day events, which
DURAN Recreation Manager Grijalva detailed.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested that the Commission conduct a park
"walk-through" at the next Commission meeting.
PUBLIC WORK Public Works Manager Rados spoke on the excellent condition of the
MANAGER RADOS parks, and added that people are willing to travel long distances to
enjoy Irwindale facilities.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran asked about vandalism at the parks, to which
DURAN Public Works Manager Rados advised that graffiti is an ongoing
problem, but the damage to the facilities are not as bad as have
been in the past.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager
Grijalva advised that the City would not be hiring new lifeguards.
Vice Chair Fraijo also asked about the recreation budget, to which
Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that it will probably be
discussed at the next Commission meeting. She noted that the
budget does not contain any significant changes from the previous
fiscal year.
PUBLIC WORKS Public Works Manager Rados anticipated that the Public Works Yard
MANAGER RADOS crew staff will be cut in half and that certain duties will be contracted
out.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked whether these lost Public Works positions
will ever be filled by a permanent City employee, to which Assistant
City Manager Diaz indicated that, although there is no intention to fill
these positions immediately, that may change in the long-term.
Vice Chair Fraijo expressed her hope that Irwindale residents can
once again fill these eliminated positions.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz indicated that he is very anxious to get started with the
flag football program.

COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Duran, Recreation
DURAN Manager Grijalva advised that rates for non-residents for the use of
the gym equipment was raised from $20 to $30 per month. The rates
for City residents remains the same at $20 per year, which is the
cost of the Recreation Card.
