The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Kwok Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS TERRY CHICO Terry Chico expressed concern over sightings of coyotes, possums, and possibly diseased squirrels at the parks. She suggested that storm drains be covered. ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that sightings of potentially MANAGER DIAZ dangerous animals should be reported immediately to the Public Works Department. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held August 3, 2011. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) All classes have been renewed and none have been cancelled due to low registrants. 2) The yoga class being held at noon is very popular amongst employees, with 11 participants. 3) Twenty-eight have signed up for the zumba classes being held on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Saturday classes have 12 participants. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS SEPTEMBER 7, 2011 PAGE 2 4) The piano class has started this week and is completely filled. Another class will be added. 5) Fifteen girls have signed up to participate in the Cheer Squad. 6) Five have signed up to participate in Flag Football, with one additional participant pending. 7) Four have signed up to participate in Lil' Munchkins. 8) The Covina Valley Unified School District has given Irwindale staff permission to distribute fliers at their schools to solicit participation. 9) Twenty-nine have registered to participate in the Kidzone program to be held after school. 10)Five have registered to participate in the Tiny Tots program. This year, residents with valid resident ID cards can sponsor non- residents for $40 (one sponsor per household). 11)A total of 111 bus passes have been processed so far this year. Staff is expecting to process more soon. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that there have been no additional issues regarding the issuance of bus passes. The issues experienced in the past were due to a lack of communication. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz requested that staff check to see if resident children can participate in the Azusa Football League. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo commended Recreation Manager Grijalva and the entire Recreation Department for a phenomenal job during the summer activities. Recreation Manager Grijalva spoke very highly of his recreation staff. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Zepeda, Recreation ZEPEDA Manager Grijalva confirmed that the beach trips to Corona Del Mar will be replaced with trips to Huntington Beach. TERRY CHICO Terry Chico asked about the Tiny Tots program, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that that Irwindale children will receive priority over sponsored children from other cities. He added that fliers with information about the program have been mailed out, and the same information is also available on the calendar. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about whether there are any future plans for the use of the tennis courts, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the area has been modified to accommodate an emergency tent to be used as a shelter during disasters.
