The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Kwok Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held October 5, 2011. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) Seventeen people attended the trip to Oak Glen held October 15. 2) The October 28 teen trip was sold out, with 23 teens in attendance. 3) Twenty-four youths participated in the annual pumpkin carving contest. 4) The Halloween Spooktacular event had about 400 people in attendance. He thanked the 52 volunteers that assisted staff in the program. He added that an animal costume contest may be held next year. 5) The flag football games have begun. Staff is in the process of scheduling additional games. COMMISSIONER ITEMS VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the bingo activities, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that they went well and that about 30 games were played. He added that the Tiny Tots did really PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING NOVEMBER 2, 2011 PAGE 2 well selling treats at the Snack Bar. He further stated that the funds raised would be used to purchase Christmas gifts for them. Responding to an additional question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that a softball team uses the field on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with lights being turned on for them on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Staff is looking into bringing brick dust to level -off the field. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran commended staff for the excellent landscaping DURAN work being done at the Skate Park. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo also commended staff for the great work in preparing for and conducting the Halloween Spooktacular activities. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez also complimented staff for the Halloween LOPEZ Spooktacular and asked about the possibility of having a "haunted house" attraction next year. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about preparing the grass at the fields for the upcoming winter, to which Director of Public Works Tam advised that staff will fertilize the fields as has been done in the past. Recreation Manager Grijalva added that the pool is also maintained regularly and will be covered soon. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz congratulated the Public Works Department for maintaining the parks in excellent condition. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS None.
