The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa-Lara, Carol B. Hernandez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Mike Rados, Public Works Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS DAVE CARSON Dave Carson, from the KARE Youth League, commended the Parks Department for its outstanding Music in the Park concert series. THERESA CHICO Theresa Chico thanked all those who donated at the Music in the Park events. She indicated that $276 was raised for scholarships. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Barbosa, seconded by Vice Chair Fraijo, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as corrected: 1) Regular meeting held August 4, 2010. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) All summer activities went very well. 2) Some complaints were received regarding individuals who camped too close to the movie screen. He added that this may need to be addressed so that everybody can have clear visibility to the screen. 3) Each of the eight beach trips has averaged 25 attendees. 4) The Music in the Park concert series was extremely successful. He indicated that he is working on inviting three new bands for future series. He also spoke on the success of the 50/50 raffle. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING NEW BUSINESS COMMISSIONER ITEMS SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 PAGE 2 5) The programs at the pool went very well, and the pool itself experienced no mechanical failures this summer. He added that there were three saves by the lifeguards this summer, as opposed to the average amount of 10. However, revenue was lower this year than the previous two years. Scheduling changes may be necessary. 6) The new Zumba class held on Saturdays is also very popular, with 14 people having registered. The program will continue for another seven weeks. 7) The Kids Zone program has 24 youths participating. 8) The Tiny Tots program currently has four children registered for participation. However, three more participants are expected to register soon. The program, designed for 3 — 6 year olds, needs at least 12 participants in order to begin. 9) Eighty bus passes have been distributed thus far. 10)There are currently only two registered to participate in the Flag Football program. There is only one registered for the Munchkin Football program. Fliers will soon be distributed at Merwin, Manzanita, and Las Palmas schools to solicit participation. Fliers were also sent to residents advertising the program. None. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked whether the pool building had a termite problem, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it does; however, the Public Works Department is looking into mitigating the problem. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked to be informed of football signups. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hernandez commented about the apparent lack of HERNANDEZ restroom supplies during special events at the park, to which Public Works Manager Rados advised that staff routinely ensures that the restrooms are completely stocked before leaving for the day. Commissioner Hernandez also asked about the possibility of placing additional trash bins throughout the park, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that disposable bins may be obtained for use in the park. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested to obtain an update on termite control measures at the pool building at the next Commission meeting. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 COMMISSIONER Commissioner Zepeda asked whether the swing sets have been ZEPEDA retrofitted, to which Public Works Manager Rados confirmed that he completed the installation of the kit. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to the BARBOSA Recreation Department staff for the wonderful and successful summer events. She also expressed her appreciation to the staff members who work at the pool and commended them for their loyalty and professionalism. In response to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that a carnival will be held during Halloween day, which would end by 6:00 p.m. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked about the conditions of the City parks, to which Public Works Manager Rados advised that they are all doing well. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa advised that the Kare Youth League will be BARBOSA hosting a walk at Santa Fe Dam and requested that staff provide any available details to the League that may assist them in their scheduling.
