The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda, Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Kwok Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held January 4, 2012. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The Cheer group came in 3rd place in each of two competitions held recently. There will be move events throughout the year. 2) Thirty family trip tickets to watch the "Wicked" play were sold. 3) The football banquet held recently was enjoyed by all. He thanked the volunteers for all their help. 4) Staff will try to implement a 'Belly, Tap, and Jazz" class for children 4 — 6 years old. 5) A Princess Ballet - Parent and Me class will be held for children 2 '/2 to 4 years old. 6) There will also be a modern Latin Dance class held for children 6 years and up. 7) The Teen Club will attend a trip to Build -A -Bear in February. 8) The Teen Club will also hold their "Stuffed with Love" campaign to try to collect as many new stuffed animals for donation to a worthy cause. 9) Hopefully there will be four teams participating in the basketball program, which should begin in February. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS FEBRUARY 1, 2012 PAGE 2 10)In addition to having the Lil' Dunkers program, staff will also hold an "Itsy Bitsy Sports Clinic" for children ages 3 — 6 to introduce them to basic drills, such as dribbling and passing the ball. The classes will be taught by recreation staff. 11)The gym floor was recently re -finished and staff will be cleaning, polishing, and deodorizing it daily. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked about program signups, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that he has received about 12 so far. As soon as enough are received, the program will start. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the summer recreation program, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva informed that, as of now, the program will remain the same as last year. She also asked about the Recreation Department's financial status, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that, since the City has lost its Redevelopment Agency, certain monies may not be available for their intended uses. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Recreation LOPEZ Manager Grijalva advised that two overnight camping trips will be held. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about a 4th of July Fireworks Show, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the Council seemed to be in agreement that the show should be held. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran asked about the Music in the Park Concert DURAN Series, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that the series will begin on July 5 and will run for about seven weeks. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Zepeda, Recreation ZEPEDA Manager Grijalva advised that a trip will be held to Huntington Beach instead of Corona Del Mar. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about repairs to the pool building, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that there are no repairs needed except for the roof. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 1, 2012 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the budget for the summer months CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz encouraged everyone to contact the Police Department if they notice any strange or suspicious activity at the parks.
