The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in special session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held April 9, 2012. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The cheerleading squad came in 1s` place at the cheer competition held recently at Azusa Pacific University. 2) The Earth Day event held recently was poorly attended. It seems that there are less vendors and attendees each year. 3) The basketball program continues as scheduled. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez commended the Recreation staff for their great LOPEZ work on the Earth Day activities. She suggested that staff work more on getting residents to attend since the activities are very informative. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about training for lifeguards, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that re -certification activities will be held May 12. He added that the department will only use the PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES SPECIAL MEETING MAY 2, 2012 PAGE 2 lifeguards it currently has and that the city will not hire lifeguards who are not certified. Responding to another question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the pool will re -open on June 8. He added that the elementary class does not use the pool anymore due to the demands of the teacher, which were out of the ordinary. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked about the swimming pool schedule, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva replied that the schedule has not changed from last year's. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran asked whether the price to use the pool has DURAN increased, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it has not. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked if the Recreation Department has LOPEZ instituted a water Zumba class, and, in response, Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that there is no water zumba class; only a water fitness class. CHAIR DIAZ Responding to a question by Chair Diaz, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the Summer Lunch program will begin on June 19 and will run through August. Volunteers can participate after receiving training. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo expressed the Commission's condolences to Commissioner Duran on the recent passing of her husband. She also asked whether there will be a 4th of July fireworks show, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the show is not being considered in the upcoming budget due to the city's serious financial problems. Assistant City Manager Diaz added that, although there are no documents available to show to the Commission pertaining to the budget, staff projects that the city is facing a $4 million deficit. Vice Chair Fraijo asked how the deficit would affect Recreation programs, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the Council has the final say in what programs would be affected by the deficit. All departments have been asked to cut their budgets by 5%. RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva added that no programs have yet been MANAGER GRIJALVA eliminated. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Duran, Assistant City DURAN Manager Diaz advised that the only part-time employees that receive benefits are the two permanent part-time employees.
