The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Present: Commissioners Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Absent: Commissioner Erlinda Duran Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Edgar Rojas, Mining Program Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Commissioner Duran absent. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held May 2, 2012. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) All tickets to the Dodgers vs. Cardinals baseball game were sold; many to non-residents. The Dodger vs. Angels tickets were also completely sold out. 2) Some classes have ended, such as the Zumba class. Though the numbers to this class has dwindled, flyers will be sent out again to seek participants. 3) All other programs continue as scheduled. 4) The piano classes are going well and will have an extra class added. 5) The basketball league, which was very successful, has ended. The basketball banquet has been scheduled for June 14. Signups will start again in August. 6) Staff is preparing for the 4th of July fireworks celebration. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING NEW BUSINESS JUNE 6, 2012 PAGE 2 7) The KidZone program for summer will run from June 18 through August 17. 8) The Summer Day Camp, which will have its first trip on July 3, will run through August 7. 9) The swimming pool will open on Friday at 12:00 p.m. 10)The summer bridge class will begin on June 25 with two sessions. 11)Signups are now being accepted for Summer Tots. 12)The first trip to Huntington Beach is scheduled for July 5; the last one for August 16 13)The first of the Music in the Park summer concert series will begin on July 5 14)The two night trips have been scheduled for July 19 and August 9 15)The free aqua fitness classes offered through Mt. Sac will begin on July 4 16)The Public Works Department has done a phenomenal job maintaining the parks. ITEM NO. 3A FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION BOOTH SELECTIONS FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION BOOTH The booth selections were conducted. SELECTIONS COMMISSIONER ITEMS CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz thanked the volunteers who participated in the basketball program and spoke of the program's success. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo suggested that staff to try earlier to get signups for football. She also thanked the Recreation Department for their outstanding work. RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva acknowledged the hard work of his MANAGER GRIJALVA staff. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the banner over Arrow Highway advertising the fireworks show will feature the logo of ReadyPac, the show's sponsor. Vice Chair Fraijo also asked about the protective netting by the pool, to which Mining Program Manager Rojas advised that Requests for Proposals have been sent to contractors for the work. Responses are expected back by Thursday. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz spoke on the theft of a plaque at EI Nido Park. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING JUNE 6, 2012 PAGE 3 VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the rules for the various Irwindale parks, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the same rules apply to all parks as set forth in the Irwindale Municipal Code. She also asked about the location of the fireworks show, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the location will be the same as in past years. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS None.
