The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in special session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Edgar Rojas, Mining Program Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CARMEN ROMAN Carmen Roman complained about the costs of the Recreation Campout. She noted that the price of participation for non-residents, at $12 per adult and $8 per child, is double that of residents. She stated her opinion that the prices are extremely expensive for non- residents. She indicated that families could instead go to Lake Elsinore, and that Irwindale does not have a lake and is not catering gourmet food to the program participants. She suggested that the prices be lowered. TERRY CHICO Terry Chico, speaking on behalf of Rosie Guerrero, complained that vendors at the Music in the Park concert series are selling without permits. She suggested more police presence at the parks. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Special meeting held July 2, 2012. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The 4th of July Fireworks Show went very well. The non-profit organizations had a profitable night with their sales. There was a PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 1, 2012 PAGE 2 VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked whether there were any major incidences during the 4th of July Fireworks Show, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that everything went smoothly. There was a great crowd and the Public Works Department did a great job preparing the park for the crowd. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran thanked the Police Department for closing her DURAN street during the 4th of July activities. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo thanked ReadyPac for sponsoring the summer events. RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that staff thanks ReadyPac MANAGER GRIJALVA frequently during the events. They also thanked Superior Communications and Royal Coaches. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo thanked the Recreation staff for their hard work. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked about the status of the installation of the LOPEZ new net at the swimming pool, to which Public Works Manager Rojas indicated that a contractor has been selected, a pre -construction meeting was held two weeks ago, and that the work should start in early September and finish after two weeks. The net is expected to last between 15 and 20 years and should be able to withstand strong winds. small fire that broke out, but other than that, everything went well and the event was enjoyed by all. 2) All programs continue as scheduled. 3) A zumba class for local youths (6 yrs+) will begin shortly. 4) Staff is negotiating with a boot camp instructor to hold classes here, on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. 5) Fliers for the Flag Football and Munchkin programs will be sent out shortly. 6) There are three weeks left in the Music in the Park concert series. The concerts are very well attended. 7) The Day Camp program has one trip left; Movies in the Park has two weeks left; the Summer Bridge program will end next Wednesday; there are three weeks of beach trips left; and one week of Summer Tots left. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Duran, Recreation DURAN Manager Grijalva advised that the boot camp class is a physical fitness class, not a teen discipline type of program. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked about flag football, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the flier will be sent out this week and signups will be taken the last week of Music in the Park. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ADJOURNMENT Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the Recreation budget, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that the budget did not experience any major changes.
