The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Camille Diaz, Assistant City Manager; William Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held May 1, 2013. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) The Tiny Tots enjoyed a trip to Adventure City; had fun during the Mother -Tot Tea & All-Star Dad events; and will be celebrating their graduation ceremonies tomorrow. 2) About 17 people enjoyed the recent trip to The Grove. 3) The Dodgers vs. Angels game was sold out and was enjoyed by all. 4) A movie night was held at Manzanita School and another at Merwin School. 5) Flyers for the upcoming football season will be sent out soon. 6) The Irwindale Cheer Squad placed second in the championships held recently at Knott's Berry Farm. 7) The Public Works Department has done a great job on the pool. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES JUNE 5, 2013 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 2 COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Duran, Recreation DURAN Manager Grijalva advised that the lifeguards are ready for work. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo indicated that some lifeguards have expressed concern over reduced work hours due to the upcoming Obamacare health plans, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the work schedules have not been finalized yet. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz asked when the pool will be re -opened, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it will re -open on June 14. Chair Diaz also asked about the Music in the Park concert series, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it will begin on June 27. He added that one additional night of night swimming per week has been added to the schedule. DIRECTOR TAM Director Tam advised that the contract work on the pool has been completed and that staff is completing minor follow-up work around the pool in preparation for its re -opening on June 14. VICE CHAIR Vice Chair Fraijo thanked staff for all its work on the pool and asked FRAIJO if there will be additional park patrol during the summer, to which Assistant City Manager Diaz advised that former Chief of Police Dennis Smith has previously indicated that park patrol can be accomplished by simply assigning officers to the parks. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran suggested that the officers patrol the park DURAN restrooms as well since there have been reports of drug dealings at those locations. She then asked if nets can be set up at the tennis courts, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the tennis courts area has been designated for use as an emergency shelter location. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked if the park rules are posted, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that they should be, but that if they are not, he will have them posted. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ASSISTANT CITY Assistant City Manager Diaz advised the Commission that she would MANAGER DIAZ be retiring at the end of June. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo thanked Assistant City Manager Diaz for her years of service and support.
