The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Present: Commissioners Erlinda Duran, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: John Davidson, City Manager; William Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Duran, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held June 5, 2013. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) He wished everyone a happy 4t" of July. 2) Twenty-two children have signed up for the whiffle ball classes, 12 for the t -ball classes, 28 for the basketball camp, and 25 girls for the volleyball camp. 3) There are 13 people signed up for the piano class. 4) There are 14 children enrolled in the Summer Tots program. 5) A dance class has been offered, but nobody has signed up for it. 6) Staff will try out a camp and divide it into three sports: tennis, soccer, and baseball. So far, only five have registered. 7) Critical Reading and Creative Writing classes will be offered through AGI. So far, only three people have registered. 8) There are eight people signed up for the Summer Bridge class. If classes are full, staff recommends other classes. 9) Two have registered for the competition cheer program. 10)The zumba classes have ended, though the next class will begin in two weeks. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS JULY 3, 2013 PAGE 2 11)Twelve people participate in the yoga classes at noon. 12)Eight have registered for the cardio kick classes. 13)The highly popular aqua fitness class will begin next Monday. The program brings in about 40 participants. 14)Seventeen participated in the family beach trip program which began last week. 15)The Music in the Park concert series began last week. 16)Since the pool re -opened, 1,949 people have utilized it. The night swimming program is the biggest draw. 17)AII sessions of the swim lessons have sold out. More registrations will be accepted soon. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Vice Chair Zepeda, Recreation ZEPEDA Manager Grijalva advised that the Camp Out program is scheduled for next week but nobody has signed up yet. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the pool, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the pool is being used heavily. There have been some minor glitches after it was re -opened, but those were all resolved. The kids who use it are really enjoying it. Vice Chair Fraijo wished Recreation Manager Grijalva and his staff good luck on the 4th of July activities for tomorrow. She expressed her confidence that they will do a great job, like they always do. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Duran asked about the beach trips, to which DURAN Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that registrations must be submitted by Tuesdays. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez wished everyone a safe and happy 4th of July. LOPEZ CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz noted that he contacted the Irwindale Police Dispatchers when he observed a non -permitted bouncer at the park. He also urged caution with those using illegal fireworks. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva confirmed that the banner has been setup. CITY MANAGER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS None.
