The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa Lara, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: William Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no comments. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Barbosa, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held April 1, 2015. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) Thirty people attended the sold out trip to the Dodgers vs. Angels game held on April 4. 2) Twenty-six people attended the trip to Marvel Universe Live held on April 11. 3) The April 25 trip to Citywalk has been cancelled due to a lack of registrations. 4) Twelve members of the Playbillers Club attended the Pride & Prejudice play held on April 26; thirty-five members attended the Motown the Musical play held on May 3. 5) The Tiny Tots will enjoy a field trip to Chuck E. Cheese's on June 2. 6) Over 350 people attended the Easter Eggstravaganza. He thanked staff and volunteers for all their efforts in the program. 7) The Canvass Kids class is full, while the Pint Size Picasso's has one spot available. 8) The Movies in the Park and Music in the Park schedules are now available. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING NEW BUSINESS MAY 6, 2015 PAGE 2 9) Staff plans on having the plaza ribbon cutting event during the first Music in the Park concert, to be held on July 2. ITEM NO. 2A UPDATE ON THE PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UPDATE ON THE PARKIMPROVEMENT PROJECT DIRECTOR TAM Director Tam advised that the project is on schedule. He noted that: the concrete work has been completed, trees have been planted around the plaza area, lighting is currently being installed around the pool and outside of the plaza area, the tile is being installed in the replacement fountain, and the fountain itself will be installed soon. Staff still anticipates that the project will be completed no later than the first week in June. Some time has been allotted to test all systems and train staff on maintenance procedures. COMMISSIONER Responding to several questions by Commissioner Barbosa, Director BARBOSA Tam advised that the plaza area will be fenced off to the public until the grand opening in order for the area to remain in its best condition, the new plaza will include concrete benches and individual stone seating, and that staff will check into re -painting the horseshoe area. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Frail o thanked Director Tam and the Public Works staff for keeping the project on schedule. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Recreation BARBOSA Manager Grijalva advised that nobody has requested scholarships for the Day Camp program, the Summer Lunch program contract will be considered for approval by the Council at its meeting of May 13 and that the program itself will begin in July and end the second week of August. Commissioner Barbosa also spoke of recent acts of vandalism at the parks and wondered how these acts can be deterred. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Recreation LOPEZ Manager Grijalva advised that both staff and volunteers may be used for the Summer Lunch program, though workers would probably need to be fingerprinted and have background checks conducted. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING MAY 6, 2015 PAGE 3 VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about Soccer in the Park, to which Director Tam indicated that the issue will be taken before the City Council for the first reading of the ordinance in May, with the second reading in June. Vice Chair Fraijo also thanked Recreation Manager Grijalva and the recreation staff for the wonderful Easter program. She also asked about the lifeguards, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the three new hires are certified and ready to go. The pool is scheduled to open on June 13. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked whether Merwin School will hold its 5th LOPEZ grade pool party at the park, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva said that their staff has inquired about it. He added that Durfee School from EI Monte has reserved the pool for one of their events. She also thanked the Recreation staff for the wonderful Easter program. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Zepeda asked about the missing swings at the ZEPEDA playground, to which Director Tam indicated that staff has ordered the replacements already. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa provided an update on the trip she is BARBOSA organizing to view an event at the Special Olympics. She also suggested recognizing Jacob and Crystal Fraijo for their service to the department and noted that the Tiny Tots is celebrating its 30 year anniversary. RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva added that the Police Department will MANAGER GRIJALVA be holding a special event on Monday to unveil its new communications center. Tommy Lasorda will be present. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa suggested attending the event to support the BARBOSA Police Department. Canvas Kids has a full class with 12 students, Pint Size Picasso's (a Parent and Me class) has 1 spot left. • Yoga has begun its next session and will run thru June. Piano and Latin Groove have been cancelled due to lack of sign ups. Summer programs/classes are being finalized and informational flyers will be posted online and available at the Rec Center by next week. • Playbillers membership has grown to 27 participants and will be meeting later this month to plan out the remainder of the year outings. Other: • We will be closed (as will all of our programs) on May 25th in honor of Memorial Day. • Three movie nights are scheduled this month in our partner schools. • Tiny Tot Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 4th at the Irwindale Senior Center.
