The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in special session at the above time
and place.
ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa Lara, Marguerite S.
Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: William Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva,
Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician
COMMISSION
REORGANIZATION
ACTING DEPUTY Acting Deputy City Clerk Hegdahl explained that it would be
CITY CLERK HEGDAHL appropriate to conduct the re -organization of the Parks & Recreation
Commission and opened the floor to nominations for the position of
Chair.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Zepeda nominated Commissioner Diaz to serve as
DURAN Chair.
There being no further nominations, Acting Deputy City Clerk
Hegdahl closed the floor to nominations and, on a call for the vote,
Commissioner Diaz was unanimously appointed to the position of
Chair.
CHAIR DIAZ Commissioner Diaz resumed the Chair and opened the floor to
nominations for the position of Vice Chair.
Chair Diaz nominated Commissioner Fraijo to serve as Vice Chair.
There being no further nominations, Chair Diaz closed the floor to
nominations and, on a call for the vote, Commissioner Fraijo was
unanimously appointed to the position of Vice Chair.
SPONTANEOUS
COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers.
CONSENT CALENDAR
MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by
Commissioner Zepeda, to approve the Consent Calendar. The
motion was unanimously approved; Commissioner Barbosa
abstaining.

The following minutes were approved as presented:
1) Regular meeting held December 4, 2013.

MANAGER UPDATE
RECREATION
Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
MANAGER GRIJALVA
1) The Christmas Spectacular event held in December was very
successful with over 250 people in attendance, with only a few
minor glitches along the way. The necessary adjustments will be
made at the next event. He thanked his staff and volunteers for
their participation in making the event memorable.
2) The trip to Mission Inn was cancelled due to rain. Refunds for the
cancelled trip were issued.
3) The trip to Disney on Ice was sold out.
4) The Tiny Tots and the Teen Club participated in the Senior
Christmas Dinner by serving meals and cleaning tables.
5) Two day camp trips were held during the Christmas break.
6) The gym floor was recently redone and will reopen to the public
on Monday.

COMMISSIONER
Commissioner Barbosa thanked Linda Marez for her help in

coordinating the Senior Christmas party. She also noted that the
teens who participated were very attentive, polite, and courteous,
and said that the seniors enjoyed it very much.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz commended Recreation Manager Grijalva for his hard
work.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez spoke highly of the Christmas Spectacular and
LOPEZ asked about possibly hiring a horse and carriage for the next event.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva commended his staff for all their hard
MANAGER GRIJALVA work and efforts and said that they each take pride in what they do.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Director of Public
Works Tam advised that the plans for the park remodel continue as
scheduled. The plans and specifications are being circulated for
internal review and approval by Building Department staff. Staff
tentatively plans to present the plans to the City Council during the
first meeting of February and afterward will solicit bids for
construction with a possible award date of March 26.

Vice Chair Fraijo wished everybody a happy New Year and hoped
for a prosperous and progressive year for Irwindale and its parks.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa thanked everybody for their warm welcome
BARBOSA to the Commission and said that she looks forward to working with
everybody for the next three years.
