The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa Lara, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz (arrived at 6:03 p.m.) SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Also present: William Tam, Director of Public Works; Priscilla Zepeda, Recreation Supervisor; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Barbosa, seconded by Vice Chair Fraijo, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Chair Diaz absent. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held March 5, 2014. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Supervisor Zepeda presented the following update: SUPERVISOR ZEPEDA 1) Sixteen attended the trip to San Juan Capistrano on March 22nd. 2) Day Camp had their first Spring Break trip on April 1sr, with 19 children in attendance. A trip to Castle Park Amusement Center has been scheduled for April 3'a 3) Ten teens attended today's trip to Disneyland. 4) A Teen Club Scavenger Hunt Outing and Dinner has been scheduled for April 7 at the Westfield Shopping Center. 5) A family trip to Universal Citywalk has been scheduled for April 26. 6) The Cheer Squad competed and took 1st place at the March 16 competition held at Los Altos High School. The Squad will compete again on April 5 at Downey High School. They will also perform at Azusa Pacific University, Edgewood High School, and Knott's Berry Farm in the upcoming months. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS APRIL 2, 2014 PAGE 2 7) Registrations are being accepted for the Piano, Latin Groove, and Cardio Kick classes. 8) The Yoga class began last week with 18 students. 9) The Canvas Kids class, which began last month, has received universally positive reviews. 10)The schedules for the Movies in the Park and Music in the Park events have been finalized. 11)The Easter Eggstravaganza will be held April 19. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa asked which night of the week is the gym BARBOSA utilized the least, to which Recreation Supervisor Zepeda noted that it is used least on Fridays. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the costs associated with the trip to Disneyland, to which Recreation Supervisor Zepeda stated that tickets for active Teen Club members cost $16, while tickets for non- active members cost $19. She added that only 12 tickets were offered this time. Vice Chair Fraijo also asked about the trip to Castle Park, to which Recreation Supervisor Zepeda stated that 14 children have registered to attend. Vice Chair Fraijo also asked about the KidZone program, to which Recreation Supervisor Zepeda stated that the program is only open when school is in session. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Recreation LOPEZ Supervisor Zepeda stated that the trip to Castle Park will still proceed even though only 14 people have registered at the moment. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the progress of the park upgrades, to which Director Tam advised that the design has been tentatively scheduled for presentation to the City Council at its first meeting in May. He added that the picnic shelter will be repaired so that it can be used during the summer. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa spoke on earthquake preparedness. She BARBOSA asked whether earthquake kits can be provided to staff and whether staff can work with the American Red Cross to provide preparedness information to the residents. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Supervisor Zepeda advised that staff has had emergency preparedness training. She added that parks staff holds evacuation drills with the Tiny Tots, for example. Also, certain staff members have received specialized instruction for what to do in emergencies. Vice Chair Fraijo suggested that the Commission recommend to the PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING APRIL 2, 2014 PAGE 3 City Manager that the City instruct residents on what to do in cases of emergencies. She also noted that the Police Department has a system that provides valuable info to its subscribers, such as what to do in case of earthquakes. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa suggested that staff look into a location BARBOSA within the city where residents can go in case of an emergency. April 2, 10 attended, cost $16 active/$19 teens/$22 sponsored • Day Camp Castlepark: April 3, 14 attended, cost $5 • Citywalk trip on April 26th was cancelled • Ramona Pageant: May 3, 12 attended, cost $14 • Upcoming trips: o Dodgers v Giants — Mothers Day Game: May 11, 32 SOLD OUT, cost $16 Cheer: • April 27th team competed at Azusa Pacific University and took 2nd Place • May 4th they competed in the State Championships at Knott's Berry Farm and finished 1 st out of 7 teams • One competition left: Edgewood High School on May 17 Classes: • Canvas Kids, which began in March has been well received and the class is currently FULL with 12 registered students • All other classes are currently running and registration for next 8wk session will be in June Special Events: • We have TWO School Movie Nights scheduled during the month of May and one in June. • Northview High School — May 16 • Merwin Elementary —May 30 • Easter Eggstravaganza was a success with 400-500 in attendance • Thank you to all our volunteers for helping make this year's event a success Other: • Swimming Pool will reopen on June 13th • All Rec Staff just completed their Red Cross Certifications — Adult and Child: First Aid, CPR, AED • Summer Food Service Program was approved by the California Department of Education for this summer • Health Inspector made a surprise inspection of the Recreation Kitchen today, pleased to announce we received a Grade A 0 24 Passenger bus is currently in the shop getting the AC replaced
