The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Veronica S. Barbosa Lara, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: William Tam, Director of Public Works; Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS TERRY CHICO Terry Chico reported that the grass at the Skate Park is dry, the walkway is full of trash, and trash containers are generally always full. She added, however, that the tables are clean and that graffiti is taken care of quickly. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Barbosa, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held April 2, 2014. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) Nineteen attended the Day Camp movie trip held on April 1. 2) Ten attended the Teen Trip to Disneyland held on April 2. 3) Fourteen attended the Day Camp trip to Castlepark held on April 3. 4) The April 26 trip to Citywalk was cancelled. 5) Twelve attended the May 3 trip to the Ramona Pageant. 6) The May 11 trip to see the Dodgers play the Giants has sold out. 7) The Cheer Team competed and placed second at the competition held at the Azusa Pacific University held on April 27. 8) The Cheer Team also competed and placed first at the State Championship at Knott's Berry Farm held on May 4. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS MAY 7, 2014 PAGE 2 9) The Cheer Team will compete at Edgewood High School on May 17. 10)The Canvas Kids class, which began in March, is full with 12 registered students. 11)AII other classes are proceeding as usual. 12)Two School Movie Nights have been scheduled: May 16 at Northview High School and May 30 at Merwin Elementary. 13)Between 400 and 500 people attended the Easter Eggstravaganza this year. 14)The swimming pool will reopen on June 13. 15)AII Recreation staff completed their Red Cross Certifications for Adult and Child First Aid, CPR, and AED. 16)The Summer Food Service Program was approved by the CA Department of Education for the summer. 17)The Health Inspector made a surprise inspection of the Recreation Kitchen. The kitchen received an "A" grade. 18)The 24 -passenger bus is getting its air conditioner replaced. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Barbosa, Recreation BARBOSA Manager Grijalva advised that the non-profit organizations that will use booths at the Summer Concert Series will be selected soon. She also asked how successful the Tiny Tots fundraiser was, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that, though he does not have the exact number at the moment, the fundraiser usually does very well. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO In response to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that there have been no applications received for the lifeguard position, probably because the city requires pre -certification and not many classes are being offered for this. Re -certifications for current lifeguards were completed last year. Vice Chair Fraijo also asked whether swimming lesson classes will be offered, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that no changes have been made to any classes that the Recreation Department currently offers. He added that the daytime swimming classes will follow the same schedule as last year. Vice Chair Fraijo thanked the Recreation Department for the great Easter program. She commended the department employees for being so friendly. TERRY CHICO Terry Chico asked when the Library would reopen, to which Vice Chair Fraijo advised that she can call the City Manager's Office for that information. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 7, 2014 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa indicated that she has spoken with City BARBOSA Librarian Baker, who indicated that the Library would reopen in June. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked about the status of the park LOPEZ improvements, to which Director Tam stated that staff anticipates Council approval of the project at its second meeting in June. He added that further recommendation and details will be provided soon. Commissioner Lopez also requested that the City Manager's Office provide instructions to residents to inform them about what to do in cases of emergencies, to which Vice Chair Fraijo suggested the possibility for the Recreation Department to hold a community event to prepare for emergencies. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested that a representative of the Police Department be present at the next commission meeting to discuss the plans for Summer Park Patrol and to discuss city emergency plans. She also asked for Public Works staff to make sure that dry spots on the landscape are watered properly and that the barbecue pits are ready for the 4th of July. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Barbosa asked for the names of the sponsors of the BARBOSA 4th of July fireworks display, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva stated that Athens and Royal Coaches are sponsoring the event, and that it will be held in the same location as previous years. She also requested that the Irwindale Cheer Team and its coaches be recognized for its accomplishments by the City Council. She noted their hard work and said that she was very proud of them. She also thanked the Recreation Department for its help. CHAIR DIAZ Responding to a question by Chair Diaz, Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the lights at the banquet room have been replaced.
