The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time
and place.

Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez,
Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez
Jr., Maintenance Lead Worker; and Armando Hegdahl, Records
Technician
There were no speakers.
MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by
Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion
was unanimously approved.

The following minutes were approved as presented:
1) Regular meeting held May 4, 2016.
RECREATION
MANAGER UPDATE
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
MANAGER GRIJALVA
1) He congratulated Commissioner Hickman on his appointment.
2) The gym lobby is being redone in order to make the front counter
ADA accessible. The project should be completed by mid-June.
3) The new bus that has been ordered, which will replace the '81
bus, should be received around June 20. The '91 bus will also
eventually be replaced.
4) There will be eight food vendors participating in the 4t" of July
fiesta, including two from a new local church, and three from EI
Buen Pastor.
5) The Mt. Sac sponsored aqua fitness classes will run from June
20 through July 29, after which the city will extend the classes
through August 26.
6) Staff is finalizing the Summer Lunch Program. Meals will be
coordinated with Covina Valley this year.

VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to several questions by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation
Manager Grijalva advised that the Public Works Department is
providing funding for making the gym counter ADA compliant, spoke
on a potential ADA compliance issue at a room at the gym being
used by the Teen Club and how staff may attempt addressing it, and
indicated that staff worked on receiving a grant to defray the costs of
purchasing a new bus, but the grant was denied.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked whether seat belts are required on the
LOPEZ new buses, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that,
though seat belts are not legally required, he believes that the new
buses come equipped with them.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the process by which food vendors are
assigned spots at the park, which Recreation Manager Grijalva
explained.
Vice Chair Fraijo commended the Recreation Department for
extending the aqua fitness classes and expressed her hope that
residents will take advantage. She also asked about whether any
more discussions have been held regarding potentially holding a
September Fiesta, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated
that there have been no such additional discussions, and noted the
difficulty in drawing attendees due to competition from the LA County
Fair.
Vice Chair Fraijo then asked about repairs of the lights at the
fountain, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the
lights were repaired under warranty.
MAINTENANCE LEAD Maintenance Lead Worker Rodriguez added that, should any
WORKER RODRIGUEZ additional repairs be needed, the company that designed the system
would be conducting them.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez and Chair Diaz welcomed Commissioner
LOPEZ AND CHAIR Hickman to the Commission.

adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
