The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez Jr., Maintenance Lead Worker; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held July 6, 2016. RECREATION MANAGER UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) There are 28 people registered for the day camp program. The first trip had 21 participants, the second one had 26, the trip to Raging Waters had 21 participants, and the trip to Castle Park had 23 participants. 2) The beach trips average 19 participants; two of these trips were cancelled due to a lack of sign-ups. Staff will consider changing trip dates to Thursdays to encourage sign-ups. 3) Family Camp -Out only had four people registered. Staff will wait to see whether registrations increase. 4) The Aqua Fitness class began last week and has 40 participants registered: 7 residents and 33 non-residents. The class will end on the 19tH 5) Swim Lesson classes average 77 students among the three sessions; with a total of 68 residents and 163 non-residents participating. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING COMMISSIONER ITEMS AUGUST 3, 2016 PAGE 2 6) The Summer Lunch program averages 30 to 40 participants per day. 7) A new Painters Club class started yesterday. Delfina Osterheim is teaching the class and is held outside on the balcony. The class is proceeding very well. 8) The Movies in the Park program averages 100 participants per week. It seems that cartoon movies do much better than live action movies. 9) The Music in the Park program also does very well with 500 people attending each concert on average. Staff advertises to solicit for donations. Donors will have their names printed on a banner and their logo is displayed on the city website. Kaiser Baldwin Park donated $2,500 toward the program, and will return with gifts and goodies for the city's Back to School giveaway. 10)The Young Citizens Competition is underway at the Senior Center. Three of the Recreation Department's Summer Youth Program participants will participate in this competition. 11)The department has now received the new school bus it had ordered. Staff is very happy with the selection. Another new bus is on order. The school bus can used for the Day -Camp program as long as the school bus sign and the red lights are covered. Next Thursday, a representative from the California Highway Patrol will inspect and certify the bus. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to several questions from Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that 1) the unused funds from the donation made by Kaiser will be carried over to next year's program, and that Kaiser will also be recognized at that time, 2) there were no cuts in the Recreation Department's budget, 3) staff will be replacing worn- out chairs and the floor at the foyer by the elevator at the gym will be replaced, and 4) there were no major incidents at the pool. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman asked where the school bus is being stored, HICKMAN to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it is currently being stored near the AmVets facility, but will soon be moved to the new storage facility. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo complemented the pool staff on a job well done. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz spoke highly of the refinished gym floor, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that it has been and will continue to be maintained annually. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez suggested that the picnic areas lines be LOPEZ repainted, to which Maintenance Lead Worker Rodriguez indicated that staff will be working on that. Before new lines are painted, the PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 3, 2016 PAGE 3 old paints needs to be stripped off. Staff does not currently have an estimated date of completion for this project. Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Maintenance Lead Worker Rodriguez indicated that the grass is not fumigated for fleas. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo asked about the installation of skate stoppers at the newly -remodeled area of Irwindale Park, to which Maintenance Lead Worker Rodriguez advised that staff is currently working on that project also. She also noted the overgrown bushes along the side of the pool, near the softball field, to which Maintenance Lead Worker Rodriguez advised that these will be maintained. He added that the gate at the gym has been primered and should be finished by next week. CHAIR DIAZ AND Chair Diaz and Vice Chair Fraijo spoke highly of the National Night VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Out event. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 6:18 p.m. Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician + l� IRWINDALE Parks and Recreation Report Trips: • Day Camp Trips o July 5th : AMC Covina Movie — 21 attended o July 12th: Medieval Times — 26 attended o July 19th: Raging Waters — 21 attended o July 26th: Castlepark — 23 attended • Teen Trips o Teen to Raging Waters was cancelled due to lack of sign ups • Beach Trips August 3, 2016 o Averaging 19 participants, although trips are scheduled weekly, we have been going every other week due to lack of sign ups. Next week is our last scheduled trip. • Upcoming trips/events: o Family Camp Out: August 12th — 13th , currently 4 registered Classes/Programs: • Painters Club began yesterday, class has 1 spot remaining (9 residents / 2 non residents) I r6 $ L- P • Aquafitness began this Monday and currently has 40 registered (7 residents/33 nonresidents) • Swimming Lessons is currently in its final session for the summer.
