The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS There were no speakers. CONSENT CALENDAR MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held October 5, 2016 RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) A trip to Oak Glen, which was scheduled for October 8, was cancelled due to a lack of signups. 2) The Teen Trip to Knott's Scary Farm, scheduled for October 14, is sold out. 3) A trip to the Camarillo Outlets has been scheduled for November 19. 4) The Yoga at Noon program concluded yesterday. A mini 4 -week session will begin next week. 5) He thanked the volunteers and participants of the Pumpkin Decorating Contest held on October 27. 6) He also spoke on the great success of the Halloween Spooktacular, held on October 29. He noted that there were approximately 400 people in attendance, 15 volunteers, and 13 donors of bingo prizes. He thanked the Public Works Department for their great help. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT UPDATE VICE CHAIR FRAIJO COMMISSIONER ITEMS NOVEMBER 2, 2016 PAGE 2 7) He then thanked everybody involved in the Trunk or Treat program, from residents to city departments, and congratulated the winner. 8) Recreation management recognized the department's hard- working staff during National Customer Service Week. 9) The Teeny Tots and Kidzone kids recently had the opportunity to participate in a Halloween parade where they visited various city departments and the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce to receive treats. 10)The Veterans Roll Call Ceremony will be held on November 11. 11)The Kidzone program will be closed the week of November 21 — 25. Vice Chair Fraijo requested that the pine needles be cleaned up to keep the park clean and looking good. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the upcoming Christmas celebration will be held on December 2"d and will likely include background music. He noted several adjustments that will be made in comparison to last year's celebration. Vice Chair Fraijo commended the Recreation Department for their wonderful work on the Halloween festivities. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman also commended the Recreation HICKMAN Department staff for their hard work. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz noted the success of the bingo games. J `L t IRWINDALE Parks and Recreation Report Nov 2, 2016 Trips: • Family Trip to Oak Glen: Saturday, October 8th, was cancelled due to lack of sign ups • Teen Trip to Knott's Scary Farm: Friday, October 14th, sold out • Upcoming trips: o Family Trip to Camarillo Outlets, Sat Nov 19th, registration begins Nov 7th Classes/Programs: • Yoga at Noon concluded yeelerdety. MINI 4wk session will begin next week to finish off the year (Nov 8 — Dec 1) Special Events: • Pumpkin Decorating Contest, Thursday, October 27th • 19 Participants - Thank you to Laura Snyder, Mary Hull and Shayna Balli for taking on the task of Judging. • Halloween Spooktacular, Saturday, October 291h • 400 Participants, 15 Volunteers, 13 donators tote " g 21 Bingo prizes (out of 30 needed) • Great Big thank you to Delfina Osterheim who ok the lead in this years event and ALL our Recreation Staff, volunteers an donators r making the 2016 Halloween Spooktacular a success. Extra thanks to our Public Works Dept for help with the set up/take down of our event. • Trunk or Treat, Monday, October 31st • 13 vehicles, including 4 Department vehicles (Rec, Senior Center, Yard and Library) (6 cars more than last year). Approximately 300-400 trick or treaters came thru. • This year's Resident Winner was Pedro & Griselda Rodriguez with their Beware entry, they received a 32" Smart TV compliments of Royal Coaches • This year's Department Winner was the Senior Center with their Gotham City entry, they received the "Trunky" Trophy. This event is growing and we received a LOT of positive feedback from the community. Other: • October 3 -7th was National Customer Service Week, we took the time to recognize our hardworking Rec staff with fun activities and treats throughout the week. • Teeny Tots and Kidzone Halloween Parade • Our Teeny Tots and Kidzone students had the opportunity to Trick or Treat thru the City Departments and the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce. Great big thanks to ALL the City Departments that participated in this year's parade. Coming in November: Veterans Roll Call Ceremony, November 11th @ 11a Kidzone will be closed the week of November 21 -25th
