The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo (arrived at 6:07 p.m.); Chair Dan Diaz SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez Jr., Public Works Maintenance Supervisor; and Armando Hegdahl, Records Technician There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Lopez, seconded by Commissioner Hickman, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Vice Chair Fraijo absent at the time of the roll call. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held November 2, 2016 RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update: MANAGER GRIJALVA 1) He provided brief background information and introduced Delfina Osterheim as the new full-time Recreation Clerk. 2) A field trip to the Camarillo Outlets was held on November 19, with 14 in attendance. 3) A trip to the Riverside Mission Inn is scheduled for December 10; 10 have registered for this trip. 4) Day Camp has two upcoming trips scheduled: one to AMC Theatre to see "Sing" on December 27, and a trip to Knott's Merry Farm on January 3. 5) The Teen Club will soon board the Metro Gold Line to attend a supervised trip to CityWalk. 6) The Teeny Tots will attend a trip to Build -A -Bear on December 19. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT UPDATE PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR RODRIGUEZ COMMISSIONER ITEMS DECEMBER 7, 2016 PAGE 2 7) The Painters Club has concluded its 2016 sessions; registrations for the 2017 sessions will begin in January. 8) The Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting event was a great success. He thanked all the volunteers and workers who participated in making the event an enjoyable one. He noted that approximately 300 people attended and about 260 stockings were handed out. 9) He thanked the Public Works Department for their assistance throughout the year at the Recreation Department's various events. 10)The Kid Zone program will be closed during the last week of December and the first week of January. 11)The gym floor will be resurfaced on January 9. As such, the area will be closed through January 14. 12)The new school bus should be received at the end of January. Public Works Maintenance Supervisor Rodriguez presented the following update: 1) Staff will make sure to maintain the old tennis court area at the park clean of pine needles. 2) The irrigation and lighting issues at EI Nido Park have been corrected. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Hickman, Recreation HICKMAN Manager Grijalva advised that the gym will be open during the Christmas break; though the resurfaced floor will not be available for use. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo and Chair Diaz commended the Recreation AND CHAIR DIAZ Department for a wonderful Christmas event. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman suggested using a backdrop for photos at HICKMAN the next Christmas event, to which Recreation Manager Grijalva agreed and indicated that they may also add more lighting. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo suggested that, even if the park landscape cannot be watered often, staff should still ensure that it is kept clean of debris and trash. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez stated that the holiday decorations on the LOPEZ poles in the northbound lanes of Irwindale Avenue are difficult to see, to which Supervisor Rodriguez indicated that he would like to PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING DECEMBER 7, 2016 PAGE 3 purchase bigger decorations with more lighting so that they can be seen more easily. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo thanked the Public Works Department for their hard work in keeping the parks looking beautiful and well maintained. COMMISSION All commissioners wished everyone happy holidays and a happy COMMENTS new year.
