The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time
and place.

Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez,
Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz
Also present: Dan Grijalva, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez
Jr., Public Works Maintenance Supervisor; and Armando Hegdahl,
Records Technician
There were no speakers.
MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by
Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion
was unanimously approved.

The following minutes were approved as presented:
1) Regular meeting held April 5, 2017
RECREATION
DEPARTMENT UPDATE
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva presented the following update:
MANAGER GRIJALVA
1) The Easter Eggstravaganza event went very well with over 350
people in attendance. He thanked all the volunteers who
participated in making the activities enjoyable to all. He noted that
the Cheer Competition Squad held a fundraiser and did very well.
The Teeny Tots also sold baked goods and the Teen Club
offered coffee, soda, and candy apples.
2) The Cheer Competition Squad participated in a national
competition on April 23`d and took first place
3) The recent Dodgers/Phillies game was sold out.
4) The department is offering two new classes: Lil' Ninjas for kids
ages 3-5, and Kenpo Karate for kids 6 and up. Both start on May
23rd.

PUBLIC WORKS Public Works Maintenance Supervisor Rodriguez advised that the
MAINTENANCE inner lights at the new park fountain have been repaired, and spare
SUPERVISOR lights have been ordered. Also, the pump for the sprinklers at the
RODRIGUEZ softball field have been repaired, though they appear to still have
some issues.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo lamented the deterioration of certain areas of the
park, including dead spots in the landscaping and broken tiles at the
Picnic Shelter. She stated that the park is the center of the
community and the bad conditions need to be addressed as soon as
possible, to which Supervisor Rodriguez noted that the city still has
watering restrictions in place. He also noted the damaged areas in
the irrigation system, but advised that these have since been
repaired.
RECREATION Responding to a question by Recreation Manager Grijalva,
MANAGER GRIJALVA Supervisor Rodriguez indicated that the city is currently using twice
as much water for its park landscape than is currently allowed under
the restrictions.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez commented on necessary repairs near the
LOPEZ baseball diamond, such as the need to repaint the area near the
backstop, and the gate that needs repairs. She also noted the fading
paint on the cement near the picnic areas, to which Supervisor
Rodriguez advised that these will be repainted before the start of
summer.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to a question by Vice Chair Fraijo, Supervisor Rodriguez
indicated that staff has plenty of backup bbq's available, and is
ordering more.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Zepeda noted that she has received a complaint
ZEPEDA about the basketball court at Jardin de Roca Park being slippery, to
which Supervisor Rodriguez indicated that staff will follow-up to see if
skaters are throwing down wax on the court. He added that the lines
at the court will be painted.
COMMISSIONER ITEMS
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Responding to several questions by Vice Chair Fraijo, Recreation
Manager Grijalva advised that: 1) several applications for the open
lifeguard positions have been accepted from qualified applicants; 2)
the swimming pool is ready for the summer program; 3) the Music in
the Park concerts and 4th of July activities have all been scheduled
and are ready.

COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Recreation
LOPEZ Manager Grijalva advised that applications are still being accepted
from potential vendors for the 4th of July event.
RECREATION Recreation Manager Grijalva advised that the pool schedule, which
MANAGER GRIJALVA is scheduled to open on June 9, will remain the same as last year,
and that he hopes to include the two-week extended schedule since
it has already been budgeted for.
COMMISSIONER In response to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Recreation
LOPEZ Manager Grijalva advised that Merwin School would not be holding a
5th grade pool party at the park pool.
COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman asked about the Summer Lunch program, to
HICKMAN which Recreation Manager Grijalva indicated that the program has
been approved by the City Council and will be held every day for
about six weeks.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested placing an item on the agenda for next
month's meeting to discuss summer park patrol plans.
CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz noted that the picnic shelter needs to be cleaned.
COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Hickman, Supervisor
HICKMAN Rodriguez advised that the weekend cleaning of park facilities is now
being contracted out. Commissioner Hickman noted that the trash
bins at the skate park were completely full on his recent visit, to
which Supervisor Rodriguez noted that additional help may be
necessary for weekends. He noted that he is working with Director of
Public Works Tam on addressing the concerns.
VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo spoke on the need to frequently rake the sand at
the playground, to which Supervisor Rodriguez advised that it is
raked once per week and roto -tilled once per month. He also spoke
on the need to address vandalism at the parks.
ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was
adjourned at �'23 p.m.
