The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo; Chair Dan Diaz Also present: Priscilla Zepeda, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez Jr., Public Works Maintenance Supervisor; and Armando Hegdahl, Deputy City Clerk COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Vice Chair Fraijo, seconded by Commissioner Lopez, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held September 6, 2017 RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Zepeda provided the following update: MANAGER ZEPEDA 1) Registrations are being accepted for the October 12 Teen trip to Knott's Scary Farm. 2) The October 7 family trip to Oak Glen has 18 individuals currently registered to attend. 3) The Teeny Tots and Tiny Tots programs are currently full and are not accepting any new registrants. 4) Thirteen students are currently participating in the Yoga classes. 5) Registrations are being accepted for the Zumba classes. 6) The "MI" Fiesta held in September was a great success. She thanked all the volunteers and employees for their efforts in making the fiesta a memorable one. 7) Upcoming Halloween festivities: Pumpkin Decorating on October 26, Halloween Spooktacular on October 28, Trunk or Treat on October 31. 8) Both school buses have been fitted with the "Child Safety Check" system. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT UPDATE OCTOBER 4, 2017 PAGE 2 9) The new senior bus will be available to pick up within a few weeks. 10)She also elaborated on staff's efforts to recognize the Recreation Department's wonderful employees during Customer Service Week. SUPERVISOR Supervisor Rodriguez advised that he is working on repairing the RODRIGUEZ damaged pavers, planters, and tiles at the Skate Park, as Commissioner Lopez previously requested. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo requested that the timeline to address the planters at the Skate Park be placed on the next agenda for discussion. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman requested that the color of the lights in front HICKMAN of City Hall be changed to correspond with national efforts to bring awareness to certain issues; e.g. the color pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, to which Supervisor Rodriguez indicated that he would check into implementing the suggestion. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO Vice Chair Fraijo concurred with Commissioner Hickman's request and suggested having the City Council consider it if necessary. SUPERVISOR Supervisor Rodriguez added that staff may be able to set up flags RODRIGUEZ and/or banners. COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Commissioner Lopez asked that an item be placed on the next LOPEZ agenda to discuss implementing a program to teach community children how to properly use the Skate Park. COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman congratulated the Recreation and Public HICKMAN Works Departments on their efforts for the successful MI Fiesta.
