The Irwindale PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION met in regular session at the above time and place. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Jason Hickman, Marguerite S. Lopez, Belen Zepeda; Vice Chair Paula Fraijo (arrived at 6:06 p.m.); Chair Dan Diaz SPONTANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS CONSENT CALENDAR Also present: Priscilla Zepeda, Recreation Manager; Pedro Rodriguez Jr., Public Works Maintenance Supervisor; and Armando Hegdahl, Deputy City Clerk There were no speakers. MOTION A motion was made by Commissioner Lopez, seconded by Commissioner Hickman, to approve the Consent Calendar. The motion was unanimously approved; Vice Chair Fraijo absent at the time of the roll call. ITEM NO. 1A MINUTES MINUTES The following minutes were approved as presented: 1) Regular meeting held October 4, 2017 RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE RECREATION Recreation Manager Zepeda provided the following update: MANAGER ZEPEDA 1) She introduced Melissa Marez as the newly hired Recreation Supervisor. 2) Twenty-two attended the family trip to Oak Glen held October 7. 3) Eighteen attended the trip to Knott's Scary Farm held October 12. 4) The Teeny and Tiny Tots recently dressed for Halloween and visited several city departments for snacks and candies. 5) Twenty children participated in the October 26 Pumpkin Decorating activities. 6) She thanked all involved in the successful Halloween Spooktacular event held on October 28, as well as the Trunk or Treat activities held on October 31. 7) The following events will be held in November: Veterans' Roll Call Ceremony will be held on the 11th, the trip to the Camarillo PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT UPDATE NOVEMBER 1, 2017 PAGE 2 Outlets on the 18th, and the KidZone and Tots classes will be closed the week of the 20tH 8) The Annual Christmas Spectacular will be held on December 1St 9) The Pool's Acid Room renovations will begin on November 6th and will take approximately 45 days to complete. SUPERVISOR Supervisor Rodriguez advised that staff will be working on repairing RODRIGUEZ the damaged planters at the Skate Park, and will probably be working on them through the end of December. NEW BUSINESS ITEM NO. 4A TIMELINE FOR THE REPAIR OF DAMAGED PLANTERS/PAVERS TIMELINE FOR THE AT THE SKATE PARK (Verbal Report; Requested by Vice Chair REPAIR OF DAMAGED Fraijo) PLANTERS/PAVERS AT THE SKATE PARK SUPERVISOR Supervisor Rodriguez commented on this item during the Public RODRIGUEZ Works Department Update, where he informed the Commission that staff will work on repairing the damaged pavers through the end of December. ITEM NO. 413 SKATEBOARDING LESSONS (Verbal Report; Requested by SKATEBOARDING Commissioner Lopez) LESSONS MANAGER ZEPEDA Manager Zepeda advised that she has researched the costs to hold skateboarding classes and noted that they tend to be very costly, and many instructors do not include equipment rental. She noted that other cities do not hold these types of classes because they are so expensive. VICE CHAIR FRAIJO As requested by Vice Chair Fraijo, Manager Zepeda compared the costs of holding such a class to the costs of existing classes. She noted that skateboarding classes are much more expensive. COMMISSIONER Responding to a question by Commissioner Lopez, Manager Zepeda LOPEZ advised that cities such as San Dimas and Laverne have similar skateboarding classes, to which Commissioner Lopez requested that staff contact these cities to inquire about the success of their classes. She added that it may be more prudent to hold an introductory course or a safety class/clinic. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 1, 2017 REGULAR MEETING PAGE 3 COMMISSIONER ITEMS COMMISSIONER Commissioner Hickman thanked the Recreation and Public Works HICKMAN Departments for their hard work in arranging for the Halloween activities. CHAIR DIAZ Chair Diaz spoke highly of the Halloween activities and thanked all those involved in organizing and preparing for the event. R rt IRWINDALE Parks and Recreationepo Trips: : nko MOl ft rez • October 7th - 22 participants took advantage of our family trip to Oak Glen • October 12' — Knott's Scary Farm teen trip was sold out with 18 participants Classes/Programs: Nov 2, 2017 • Teeny and Tiny Tots had the opportunity to parade thru the City Departments and the Chamber of Commerce for some Trick or Treating fun. Special thanks to all that participated. Special Events: • Halloween festivities o Pumpkin Decorating / Thursday, Oct 26' — 20 children participated in this event. The children had fun competing in various categories. Special thanks to this years judges Librarian Shayna Balli, HR Manager Mary Hull and Executive Assistant Laura Snyder.
